Classic & Vintage - The ALAN Parsons project: call for content

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

There's been a lot of traffic on ALAN's lately - people seem to find them everywhere. That's good, because they are lovely bikes! The same questions seem to pop up every time though. How old is it, what model, what threading. I was thinking that it might be a good idea to start a dedicated information portal for these wonderful bikes, since the information is scattered all over the web. It would make a nice project for the summer too, and a good way to brush up my web developer skills.

But, the site would be useless without content. Therefore I'd like to ask you guys for anything you have on these machines - brochure scans, pictures, racing anecdotes, horror stories - you name it.

Thanks in advance, Constanteyn

Great idea Constanteyn. I wish I had those sort of skills.

I like it. It sort of seems that Alan's were unjustly kicked to the curb when stiffer aluminum frames made their appearance. I still like riding mine even with it's flex when standing and scary hands off the bars handling. I don't have a whole lot of content other than owning one for 35 or so years. Except for the story of how I came to own it which I already relayed to you. Happy to take pictures of it and document anything you need though.

Well, with the Turn of a Friendly Card, a Tale of Mystery and Imagination, we could come up with some Alan Parsons Psychobabble....

In fact, I'm going to see a play based on Tales of Mystery and Imagination tonight, and the Alan Parsons LP is the backing music.

C'mon, be sirius guys! Things are well under way, just a quick question though, who knows the font that alan used for it's decals? Or a close match? I'd love to use that for the graphic design.

Another great idea. I had a look at fonts but I didn't see anything that matched the ALAN font. I certainly didn't look through 'all' fonts though. I think it may have been developed for the company.

Reproduction decals are available on Ebay (forget the guy's name, but he does a lot of them). He might know.

I have no brochures or anythign, but I do have an Alan and it has a serial number. You may well just start doing a redgistry type of thing while you are at it.

I really like my ALAN Super Record (http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpeeds_1/Feature_Bicycles/Feature_Bicycles_Itlay/ALAN_SuperRecord/ALAN_SUPER_RECORD_1_Start.htm), which came to me as a stolen bicycle. Today, that wonderful old aluminum steed lives in Thailand...

Here is my '81 Super record. As found (in a barn), less than 100-miles on it. The chain-stay derailleur cable stop cracked and was "put-up" by the original owner. Upon inspection, it is a simple fix, if I could find another one! (see last picture). All steel bits served as annodes for the oxidation of the aluminum. Presently awaiting full restoration.

I know where there is an NOS 58cm Alan Super record Frame set, if anyone is interested PM me. It even has the factory paperwork in the seat tube. It's light metalic blue with silver aluminum lugs.

Emailed ALAN the other day, they got back at me with the message that it's a 77-78 model. No word on original componentry, because they only sold frame kits back then.

That's a beautiful machine. What kind of brakes are those?

Velo Orange, Gran Cru, I believe. I had to drill the front fork to install a brake guide to minimize the fork flex. I thought the cantilevers go well with the other yellow bits.
