Southeast - New law in VA regarding red lights...

Here's the part that's important to us:



Traffic lights: Motorcycles, mo-peds and bicycles will be allowed to proceed through red lights so long as the rider comes to a complete stop for 120 seconds, treats the light as a stop sign and determines that it is safe to proceed.

That could come in handy a few places here in Florida where I ride. There a few lights that I have to run once in awhile because they are trip lights and not much traffic to trip them sometimes.

Thanks for passing that on. I really should check the Va. cycling laws, so far just been using what I know from driving.

I was wondering why those two cops didn't pull me over the other day when I stopped and strolled the the red light. LOL. Thanks for posting!

Good info. Doing a ride in Harrisonburg at the end of the month . . . but the 'burg was never big on stoplights.

I wonder how many times one would be at a light for 2 minutes without it changing. And if you are at a light that long, is it on a busier street -- thus the longer light cycle?

I shouldn't complain, but it's unlikely that I'm going to sit there for 120 seconds waiting for a light to change at an empty intersection. If there's traffic, I'll wait for a gap, but if it's clear, I'm going after a few seconds, not 120.

120 seconds seems unreasonably high. For vehicles it is considered Level-of-Service F if a signal delays a vehicle 80 seconds.
