Radiant Coppertone on a 1965 Schwinn Super Sport,to be more exact! :D
Yesterday I had to drive to and from Southy to pick up an appliance which can't be found any place in NH. :( Before I left I scanned CL-Boston, and spotted an ad of interest. ;) 6 emails later, I decided to detour into Woburn on the way back.
The paint, chrome, and aluminum bits all have great restoration potential. Looks to be all original except the tires. Even has the chrome Titan stem and the "Sport" scripted and sleeved bars. While a 22" frame is smaller than my normal 24", I think I can make this work.
Here are the pictures from the seller. I'll take better ones later today.

Even the Hunt-Wilde bar tape appears to be original.

Nice score - and my favorite Schwinn color! Soooooo 60's!
Let's see a full side view pastorbob!
Bob, Nice find! I worked in a Schwinn bike shop the summer of '67. Gold was THE color and I've wrapped more than my share of handlebars with that tape.

Better pictures later today. I just couldn't wait. I'll clean and polish the top bar to show the possible outcome.
Just snagged a role of Hunt-Wilde Coppertone bar tape on ebay! I'll replace the tires (they don't match, one is a Raleigh, the other a Schwinn). I also have a spare set of white Weinmann brake lever hoods I've been hoarding. This baby will look sweet.

Coppertone is the bee's knees for 1960s Schwinn fans. There are many great colors in their charts, but this is one of the favorites among all collectors.
You can't beat the forged dropouts with RD hanger, the lack of an integrated kickstand hanger, and brazed on down tube shifter bosses. Even with the all steel one piece cranks, this fellow only weighs 29lbs. Almost as light as the 1968 Raleigh Record I restored for a friend. After I replaced the steel rims with aluminum ones, it weighed 28lbs.

Very cool, I just did a '64 Varsity and I also noticed the weight difference between these old ones and the later versions. I know the outside diameter of the tubing is smaller on the ones of this vintage.

Nice one! Grail bike for me -- just about any coppertone Schwinn my size would do. I never see them on CL or at the yard sales, so that's a good find for you, PB. I've seen them only at the Ann Arbor - Saline Bike Show.
Nice find! It looks real cool. Yes, that color is an attention grabber. I'm a convert! ;)

This is a man's 10-speed bicycle from the early 1960s when Schwinn still made frames in the U.S. The handlebars and tires were replaced (seat too) to make it easier and safer to ride, but the frame is the Chicago-made Schwinn Varsity frame. The bike clearly needs work, but is rideable as is, and the tires are surprisingly airtight (that is, it has been in the shed for years, and the tires are not flat). You could use it as is, or if interested in vintage bikes, use the frame in a rehab.

Must of been a week of finding old Schwinns. I picked up a green single speed(originally 3spd) Collegiate for $5. Good thing I was wore a Campy shirt on that day. I was checking out the Schwinn and he goes "I've got a bike in the garage with some Campy parts on it. Would you be interested in anything like that?" Oh man would I but not to look too excited. He pulled out a 1984 Bianchi Nuovo Alloro in Celeste and just a little dirty. Paint had just a few tiny chips but no rust and all original. I didn't want to shoot him a lowball but then again I didn't want to kick out some high number and screw myself over. So he just said he would figure out a price and email me back. A few hours later I get the email telling me I could have it for $125. Grabbed it this morning and have been cleaning it up through out the day. Score! Too bad it's a 62cm as I ride like 50-52cm. It'll help pay for my framebuilding course in two weeks.
Late to the party as usual, but Congrats Bob!
That's my kind of bike! :thumb:
My first Schwinn lightweight was a '63 or '64 Traveler in Coppertone when I was 11 or 12. That bike brand new was just stunning.
I think this is only the second '64 Coppertone SS that I've seen in over a decade of looking for vintage Schwinn road bikes. Definitely not many out there anymore.
Congrats again!

Must of been a week of finding old Schwinns.
Or having them find you. I was saddled with tuneups for 10 genuine 1950's Schwinn gaspipers (and a J.C. Higgins Flightliner) not more than two weeks ago. They were nice to look at (minty, minty, minty!), but a pain to service after the 5th bike. There was a 1957 Mark II Jaguar in the mix that was a particular pain; it had an incorrect 3-speed cable that kept sticking on the inner tank brace due to it's length and cable stop position.

Clean and polish to bring forth as much of the original finish as possible. Preserve the patina. Replace the tires, bar tape, brake blocks, and cables and housing (as needed). Ride on beautiful days. Take paired pictures with Sporty.

Gorgeous bike!
So many things to address, so late at night.
The r. der. is at a wrong angle. There is a part in it which provides a travel limit stop for both front and rear pivot which is obviously not working. Investigate and you will see what I'm talking about.
The stem is a Paramount stem. Off the top of my head I thought that the SS had gone to the alloy AVA stem by '65, but in any case, the stem paired with those "Sport" bars was labeled "Super". These were the same as used on the '62/'63 Superior and the '64 SS. I don't have a pic at hand just now, but can provide one if you want to see what they look like. The stem was made by Titan though.
The brake levers are what I've seen mostly on '66 models. The '65 models had a similar looking lever but without the vertical lines in the quick release bit.
Saddle: The Sprint saddle was only used on the Varsities. The correct saddle for the SS is the Brooks B15.

Other than to take the pictures and take it for a quick spin up the street, I've done no work yet. I'll investigate the RD. I've never seen a Huret set up that way.
In the SLDB Gallery there is a 1965 Violet SS (isn't this one Bob Hufford's?) that has the same stem and bars.

With an "L" or November build month, could Schwinn had already switched to the '66 parts supply?
I have a spare B15 which will probably go on this Super Sport.
Thanks for the clarifications.

PB, I have two pairs of those weinmann brake handle covers in metallic coppertone. Schwinn brand and they are in fantastic shape. I just showed them to Kurt the other day. If you want a set PM me and they are yours. I know they'll match the color of your bike. They're very easy to install, drop them in some hot water for a bit, and then just slide them on.

Mike,
You are very kind to offer the Coppertone Grips! I'll send you an email shortly.
The grips do seem to match the shifter covers. I've never seen these before. I would guess they are after market generics and happen to fit the Sprint (sic. Huret) shifters well.
Front or top of cover with "341 REG? or 341 REC?"

I'm also curious about the early '60s Weinmann centerpulls. The side pull Weinmann calipers on my '62 Continental are rather nondescript with stampings in the castings indicating the model "TYPE" (750 IIRC).
These, however, have the red label as "vainqueur 999" on the rear, and "WEINMANN VAINQUEUR 999" on the front.
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p71/pastorbobnlnh/Super%20Sports/65%20Coppertone/P7010149.jpg
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p71/pastorbobnlnh/Super%20Sports/65%20Coppertone/P7010151.jpg
Obviously the rear has significantly longer reach than the front. Were the "Vainqueur" models of a different quality? Did they come in different numeric numbers such as "888" etc.?
Weinmann Sidepull on '62 Continental as a comparison.
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p71/pastorbobnlnh/Continental/Campagnoloed%20Continental/ContiHeadbadgeView.jpg
Notice the "naked" Huret shifter. This is what the "Sprint" should look like under the cover.
Also notice how the headbadge on the Continental has faded away. The haedbadge on the Super Sport is in excellent condition!

Well, I've begun to answer some of my own questions. Just ran the Corgis out and took another look.
First the calipers: I have a restored '68 Raleigh Record and the calipers read this way on the red label: "WEINMAN VAINQUEUR 999/750."
I also discovered the rear QR lever reads "ATOM" instead of "SPRINT."
I cleaned the grips on the levers and the cover on the shifter with a Magic Eraser. The grips read "DARE Brand Made in England" on the bar side.
It is definitely "REG" on the shifter cover. Since one is made in Italy and the other England, they are not matched pairs. But they have aged to be the same shade of yellowed white. :p
So should I install the NOS very white Weinmann brake lever hoods I have when I re-wrap the bars? They probably won't match the grips on the levers. Or should I take Mike up on his offer for a Coppertone pair of grips?
The dealer catalog page clearly shows hoods.

While I'm at it, I've not had a chance to examine the pedals in detail. Any idea on the brand of these beauties?

Re: Stem;
Hmmmm...that's two of these now with the Titan stem. I may have to revise my thinking on this. The problem is there are so few data points to gain info from anymore. I've attached a pic of the "Super" stem that came on the '62/'63 Superior and that I'm pretty sure that I've seen on some '64 Super Sports and a very early Super Sport that had a late '63 serial number. I know the stem that you have was the one that came on the early sixties Paramounts, but perhaps it was used on some of the Super Sports also. Schwinn did switch things around a bit when supply problems arose.
I think those brake calipers are the same as on my '65 P13 Paramount which is presently in pieces awaiting overhaul.
AFAIK, the '62/'63 Superior was the only model to use the Huret hoods on the shift levers, but if you want to keep them and want a matching pair, I have a few extras(NOS) and can send you a pair.
I believe that the pedals are Atom and they are correct for the bike.
The new hoods would look nice with the fresh bar tape.
Personally, I would not use brake lever covers, but it's your bike. ;)
I think the MM Atom skewers are correct for this bike. My knowledge of which bikes used the Sprint hubs, skewers, and freewheel is sketchy, but I'm leaning towards 1966 and not sure if the SS used them at all. More research in the part numbers needed.

Bob, here is the "Super" stem on my current '62 Superior project.
Also a pic of the Huret shifter booties. PM me your mailing address if you want them.
Don't know about the Sprint skewer. Some years ago I put together a spreadsheet on the part #s for these early-mid sixties Schwinn road bikes that I gleaned from the dealer's catalog. I studied it at the time but have forgotten most of it by now. When I get some time I will look at it again and see what I can figure out.
