I'm not sure whether I like this idea, but it's definitely interesting and the least C and V thing I've ever seen:

I loathe to admit how much that made me laugh. So highbrow...
I had a chance to try the Shimano Nexus 4 automatic shift system not long ago. it was on a Bianchi Milano, which is a stately but decidedly not racy bike, and it was pretty well geared. There's a cadence sensor in the BB, and when you get to a certain cadence (which you can set with a lever on the handlebar) it automatically shifts you up. It worked really nicely, I could barely tell when it shifted. This thing you describe is kinda cool, but I wonder if it's better than the Nexus 4 system.

You have to love that messy build. Cables everywhere held by electrical tape, skinwall up front, blackwall at back, C&V rims, and the strangest bit: Cantis at the back and V brakes in front. Are those Shimano levers adjustable for linear pull?

I don't see this having much of a biking application, actually, but it could have real promise for people who have severe mobility issues. If one can shift a bike, one can do all sorts of interesting things to do with moving artificial limbs and such, I'd imagine.

Lets see - Think French??? NO Japanese??? No Italian???
Come to think of it my bike already does shift with my mind - And sometimes it has a mind of its own...

That's what I got out of the article, the bicycle is just the demonstrator for the technology. Scary smart people at work!

Maybe so, but I fear it'll wind up with the rest of the auto-shift ideas over the years - reverse-engineered and marginalized into a cheap Chinese novelty junker.

What happens if you pass an attractive member of the opposite sex and get distracted? Then what does it shift?
