I presently have a Norco Mountaineer and am looking for an upgraded mountain bike for simple trails and road. Are these 2 bikes a good step up from my 2008 Norco Mountaineer? Thank you. Rich.

This is just me, but if your current bike fits you well I'd keep it and just upgrade the components that you're not happy with. It doesn't look like you'd be getting a much better frame than what you have now. Both bikes you mention are a step up, but IMO not worth spending ~$600 for "simple trails and road".
All that said, if the Mountaineer is like trashed, or you just have money to burn, I'd go with the Giant. Verify the component specs before you buy though - I'm seeing the same model (Revel 0) in various places specced with different forks/brakes/derailleurs etc.
