i got my hands what looks to be a late 70's - early 80's fuji track frame, and i'm trying to figure out what what it would have been built up with when it was new (if it was even sold as a complete bike).
here's the info i have: steel frame, made in japan, simple, clean lines and cut-out lugs, hand-stamped serial number on the bb shell.
i emailed fuji and never heard anything from them.
anyone got any ideas?
thanks!

I converted a fuji 70's road frame recently and most of the original parts were suntour with sugino cranks, and nitto bar and stem

I'm converting one right now. I'm working on the paint job. It sounds much like your's. Mine says(ed) "Special Road Racer".
What ideas are you looking for? Fix that *****!!!

mine's a 'sprint' and it's a true track frame. so far i've got sugino mighty competition cranks (165), nitto 38 cm bars, some older pro-ace pedals, a campy seatpost, record hi-flange wheels and a tange headset, so it's kind of a mis-mash, i'm just trying to figure out what it WOULD have had on it, and also exactly how old it is.
My main ride is also a Fuji, 80's just about, not a track frame though. I'll have to chime in again with the parts - Sugino crank, came with full Suntour parts and Nitto stem and drops. Just like everyone else.
Which is sort of nice really, because Fuji really put some nice Japanese stuff on their bikes in the day I love the Nitto stem I have, and the 165 Sugino cranks are sweet.
me too! I found a Royale II, i am makin it into singlespeed for my brother, nitto, sugino and suntour, yep!
I am just painting it myself, flat black, beater style.

I would bet money on Sugino cranks, Nitto stem and bars, MKS pedals... Rims... Ukai? Sunshine hubs?
In addition to the S12-S I fixed for a friend as mentioned in the pics thread, I also have a '87 Tivoli (which I just rode home being as it's my rain bike) conversion. I really like it. Fine lightweight Tange steel frame with tight geometry. Who made Fuji's old headsets? Were they house brand. They're pretty basic, but seem to hold up super well. Even the S12-S wasn't in too bad of shape. I just cleaned and repacked it because I figured it would be fun to completely overhaul everything. And of course I love my Fuji Track frame+fork.
Rims... Ukai? Sunshine hubs?
Most likely, unless it was something really special or maybe a bike made for the Japanese market.

Did you edit your post? I didn't remember seeing this 10 seconds ago... :D
The original headset on my S-12S (just went out to the hall to check it at work) reads: "Tange Industries Japan" around the top of the topnut or whatever you call it.

I did edit. No need to pollute the thread just to catch the eye of the one or two people who read before I get around to adding my additional thoughts.
Anyhow, love the headset other than the fact that they can be a bit of a pain to tighten since they have that knurled part at the bottom that's supposed to be hand tightened. I suppose mine probably says Tange too then. :)

ok, so the consensus seems to be: tange headset, nitto bars and stem, sugino cranks, mks pedals, sunshine hubs, ukai rims, prolly suntour cog and seatpost?
any ideas on how to find out when it was made?
Post pictures and let us guess?

Dude, that looks great. However, mine is going to be so much hotter than your's. Sorry, but it's true. I'm building it up for my rain bike.

Have a '75 Fuji Professional road bike. Same elongated shaped headbadge as your track bike.
BTW . . . it is up for sale: $400 + shipping; 21 inch frame, beautiful condition, color: silver (Fuji called it :mink).

Well, depending on how hot your bike ends up I might just have to overhaul mine to beat yours. Come spring I can lose all the winter protective gear (fenders, tape on the tubes, power grips, the disc fork, brake and flatbars) and replace them with the original crowned fork, a set of deep drops and no brakes. Throw in a restoration of the paintjob and my other wheelset and we are blinging like a Japanese business man.
However, right now its got a badass don't f*ck with me attitude not unlike a ninja from the chaotic space future with a crazy assassin pistol with a scope and a huge clip with tape wrapped around the handle look to it.

Love the track bike. Slick.
Fwiw, my headset is stamped TIEN HSIN. Apparently they're a Taiwanese company--actually own FSA, in fact. Def the same design as that old S12-S headset.
