I'm swapping wheels on my Raleigh Tourist. The old (though not original) 1977-ish hub has no locknuts. The "new" 1984-ish one does. The sprocket-side locknut seems to be fouling a little on the chainguard. Is it ok to remove the locknuts on the new hub to match the old? And if so, how?

I've never seen one without the locknuts for the cones (AW or other hub). I'd see if you have spacers or nuts on the other side (right hand cone) you can replace with thinner spacers or nuts. If the problem is the sprocket rubbing on the inside of the chainguard, I'd try bending the chainguard very slightly, or experimenting with the dish on the sprocket, depending on what is rubbing. (Are the spacers and sprocket on the new hub arranged the same was as the old one?
