My Dahon Cadenza has a funny looking headset (http://road.cc/content/image/2852-dahon-cadenza-adjustable-stem)
The big black bit is a rubbery compression tube which fits on top of an integrated cup and cone loose ball arrangement.
How much compression do I need on the top nut? Does the rubber ring make fine adjustment unnecessary? Any tips welcome.

Looks like a common threadless headset.. to me. ask Thor.
he is a Dahon Dealer and posts here occasionally

or wait and see if he finds this post.

How much? presupposes using a standard unit of measure ,
do you have a torque wrench?

then the dialog can be in numbers. rather than adverbs.

adjusts like a normal threadless. only an extra step to set the stem height. tighten to eliminate play, then set stem height and lock it down
