Whether you like Lance or not, you have to admit the tour is not the same. Before all you Lance hater's send your snide comments consider this. Look at the threads so far, boring and no excitement, this time last year the threads were buzzing.

That's hilarious! You should have at least waited until after a quiet day at the races to make that silly comment! The entire GC was thrown into turmoil in the last few kilometers of the race on the first stage.

Every time Lance isn't in the TDF some idiot says this.
Just go away.

The only difference is that this year we can see more tete de la course action instead of having our TV screens dragged back to watch some old guy in 80th place crash a bunch.
I think this is the start of the least calculated, least predictable and most exciting TDF in a decade.

You see, there you go, before you read the comment, you just had to make your usual snide comments. You must really have a case of self doubt, to always be attacking someone. We idiots only say it because it is true.

13,000 + posts, my my that is impressive. You must be good at this, or, not have much of a life.

I saw the whole race and it was exciting. I only meant the posts did not sound very enthusiastic. Whether, folks want to admit it or not, the interest is not there except among the purist. I think the idea most folks on this forum cannot except, is that viewership before and after Armstrong raced was and is way down.

You must like NASCAR, if you need a wreck to make it exciting

In America, yes. Picking up again now that there are American teams and record number of American riders riding the Tour. It's not like America was a pro cycling market even during the Lance years. As far as an amateur sport/recreational activity I've seen it do nothing but grow. I can't really say what it looked pre-Lance as I got into cycling in high school ~2002.

For one, were still in the first couple of days. Interest (BF posts) will probably pick up once the Tour reaches the mountains and it gets to make or break time.
And the tour has been the same without Lance. Last years race was very exciting to watch. The interest in cycling in America has dropped without Lance. No doubt. Most of the regular cycling fans here know that and knew it would happen before Lance retired. Its unfortunate, but reality. Interest in the TdF (number of posts as you indicated) here on BF has dropped because the fanboys have disappeared. Some are still here and have generated a better interest in the sport and are now genuine cycling fans. Some have thrown their allegience to Andy Schleck. But most have gone, as they usually, do every August after the Tour is over. That's the problem with having such a marketing interest in one athlete. When he goes, the casual fan interest departs with him. Leipheimer and Horner don't have the ability nor the personality to pick up the interest in the U.S. There are a couple of younger riders with potential, but they have to win.
But the racing itself has been exciting. I really hope the Giro took a lot out of Contador. Because if it didn't and he still has the form he had a couple of months ago in Italy, this time deficit he has now is nothing.
that's very well put, it's unfortunate that so much focus was on one athlete...maybe in a sport like football it doesn't have the same effect because more people follow football. But frankly, the last 3 or so tours of lance armstrong weren't all that exciting to watch and even Lance himself didn't seem to care that much about cycling anymore, and it showed. That's why i like the giro more, because there was more suspense, not the same person winning every year in exactly the same way. Now that the tour is more like that, it has more potential, the downside of course, that american media interest has waned and we're all suffering....coverage is even less than it used to be. They still think the tour is the only race on the calendar.

Well I don't think your post count is an issue OP. I DO think, however, that making such a comment after stage 2 of a 21 stage race is...well....stupid. These first 2 stages, for me at least, have been good stuff. A team time trial on the second day was a winner. I do remember some boring threads, many of them in fact, from the Lance era. US Postal/Discovery era. Those years, IMHO were, while very successful, were clinical and boring and seemed to lack any heart or passion, 2 things that make this sport so special in he first place.
