Mountain Biking - Posers(who's got em')

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The last few times I've been one of my fav. trails I've noticed these guys hanging out in the parking lot. They don't get dirty ,there bikes dont get dirty. There at the truck when we leave and there when we get back. I do see them ride in the parking lot. What gives, does this go on everywhere?

We don't get to many to be honest. Most people here ride to some degree. Probably the closest thing is people who have huge big travel bikes for a curb drop, but even then, that is one step in progressiong :) I am sure we might, but I tend to ride with riders and not track people around me to much

Theres a bunch of roadies out here that have full team kit and team bikes etc. I can easily catch and pass then on a 25+ year old bianchi that weighs about 5lbs(atleast) more than their bikes do.
I haven't really noticed any mtb "posers" as you put it. I don't really consider the roadies I talked about "posers" either, just people with enough money that they can afford to be extravagent. Of course getting passed by a 15 year old kid wearing mtb style shorts and a t-shirt while riding a 25 year old bike has got to be embarrasing(sp):D

given my level of skill (rather lack thereof) i'm always reluctant to pass judgement on these kinds of people?
but the other day there was a clearly well-off family of three, mom + dad + kid with spandex all over, super reflective sunnies and high-end giant NRSs, going down this slight 20-35 degree firetrail, pebbly but nothing major. faces all serious and really unfriendly, looked like roadies who think they're hard core mtb'ers just cos they were riding on a non-paved road (geez that must've been really tough).
what was funny was the kid - with all the high-end gear and equipment, he was actually walking down the trail. hmmm...

I'm probably the classic poser - have a pretty nice mountain bike, don't ride it much (but want to) - I spend more time looking at/tinkering with my mountain bike than I ever do riding it (mostly while I'm supposed to be working).
However, I'm not a poser on the "too much travel" front - 5-6' drops full rigid (not my xc bike however)
I don't think I pay too much attention but to be honest the tougher trails here are a bit of a haul to get to for most people so it's unlikely that you'll find poseurs driving to the trailhead and just parking there. People who go to them are there to ride. For the lighter trails, when I ride them, I'm the one who's the poseur who's rolling along crushed limestone paths on a full-suspension carbon fibre bike so I'm probably not one to be judging. When I ride the trails behind my house (The Beav), sometimes I will see a couple of riders on high-end rigs walking on the easy sections but even then I really can't judge. They could be tired after having climbed one of the really steep singletracks from the bottom of the plateau. Actually, one time I managed to get myself lost in these trails and was standing around in the middle of the marsh section trying to figure out which fork to take. Along comes this girl on an oldschool full-rigid DiamondBack who stops and asks me if I was doing okay. Swallowing my pride, I admit to her that I was lost and asked her if she knew the way back to a particular trailhead that would dump me out in front of my house. She told me to follow her and led me out at a pretty good clip and handling the singletrack pretty nicely. I must have definately looked like the poseur that day.

OK...no offense man, but if a bunch of friends choose to get together, screw around for 4 hours, then go ride for even an hour who cares? They're doing what they want to do, are they getting in your way? No... Sorry...I just see no point being considered in other's business, it's people like you who look at me pedalling at a measly 5 mph and laugh and think, why does he need a 1200 dollar bike? They're havin' fun doing whatever they're doing...go have yours and quit trying to find problems with other people.

i love people that talk about riding an old bike and passing someone (usually older with a nicer bike) like that means anything. maybe those posers in full team kit are on mile #110 when you passed them on your 4 mile ride.
if it makes you feel special though by all means,,,

I see a lot of people riding around in Regina on dual suspension bikes with huge amounts of travel.... i consider these people to be posers... for those of you who know the topography of the regina area, you will probably agree with me..

I can tell they are the same mileage(is that even a word?) as me because I'm the one that rides by as they are leaving their house at 8:00AM ;)
And once I pass, the chase is ON!

Guys we're all posers, the real riders are out riding....not on some interweb chat forum thingy. O SNAP!
This is hard to say. I have a 2500+ MTB long travel full suspension bike that I use for "free riding" at work. Of course no one sees me taking the huge drops at the local trails...

Ok, I have changed my mind about posers.
If you want to buy a $5000+ bike and then ride up and down the street with it fine, thats your deal.

Also keep in mind, posers keep the prices down. They buy their high end bikes and help feed the companies just enough so they don't jack the prices up to much :D

I have said it before and IŽll probably say it again but why not just focus on your own ride and stop criticising others. Just think about what is wrong with your own life that you need to criticise others. I probably have way more bike than I really need. I admit it I am a poseur. You are a way more serious cyclist than I am. Now do you feel happy and if not why not?. Maybe then the criticism thing is not working out for you?

Simple answer...
Jealousy. Its ironic the best riders I know don't always have the best bikes and don't care. Average riders want the best bikes cause they want to get better and the bike does help at that point.
Complicated answer...
Deep seeded need to reduce someone elses possession or ability in order to assist making themselves feel better about their possession or ability. To bring someone else down automatically boosts you up theory :)...
Likely answer....
Its almost winter time. Most people can't/dont ride in the winter. This is a way of having fun before the endless "how do yyou bunnyhop"..."which bikes should I get" and "what exactly is freeriding" winter seasons REALLY hits. Tis the season

I don't really see the point in this tread. I was a poser in your eyes today i guess. I went out at 8:00 and broke some stuff on my bike by 9:20. I sat and talked with others from 9:30 till about 12:30. Some people like to go out talk for a bit and then hit up the trail when there arn't all these 15 year old.
I do not mean to insult. Where I ride, it is the young ones that do not have trail edict and makes it hell to be out with some friends. Plus it is too darn hot still here in Florida to ride for more than once and not take a good break.

Yeah...I guess the same thing can be said with cars....People get together with their cars and talk for HOURS, then drive off in their 300hp civic and go the speed limit? POSERS! Freaking POSERS! LoL....socialization is as much a part of cycling is the act itself.

IMO a non-poser would save the showboating for the track and the poser would do something stupid on the street :p

No offense man, but when you don't ride that hard and you have an expensive bike (which is understandable because you're a big guy) it looks like like buying something and never using it. Think of it like this:
I buy an ipod, and put 40 songs on it. Wasteful? Yes. Does it look stupid when someone with 5000 songs browses your library? Yes.
Also, that civic comparison is fairly terrible, seeing as how actually biking instead of dicking around is legal, and speeding instead of dicking around is illegal.

My point is swiffer, that those guys who sat there for 3 or 4 hours chatting maybe 1. be planning on a ride, or 2. finished a ride, washed their bikes, and now are chatting. It's socialization, the same act that people with their cars do. See my comparison yet?

48 sundays in the year, I go out for a 30 mile ride on our local hills. It always takes in a stop for refreshments, and it is surprising how muddy and dirty we get in the trip out. How is it that another group we see, that has covered about the same distance, have pristine bikes? Easy enough, They have a rapid blast out to the Cafe on the road, and then go and play in the mud. We get the mud both ways, but it's hard on the way back.
They may appear to be posers at the cafe, but on the one occasion we took their route back with them, they killed us.

For **** sake. When will you guys just drop this. Honestly, I don't give a ***** how much the 'poser' (or the 'posers' parents) spent on a bike. I don't see why the price is such an issue to you guys. I have a friend who doesn't have a big bike. He rides his BMX or my buddy's old riged bike with broken pedals. He keeps up with us all the time. Give him a nice bike and he rips it up better then me. (Not saying much because I suck but anyways) He's crazy. As long as he knows the bike can take it he'll huck it or ride through it.
So drop the money ****. Price shouldn't be a factor in 'posers'. If I were to buy a $5,000 bike to ride on would that make me a 'poser'? Just because i'm not a pro, but have an expensive bike? Take your poser hating selfs to pinkbike.com's forums and make fun of those kids. I've heard they drop grand after grand into there bikes but can't ride. Ya damn Nazi's. Someone close this thread.
