Bicycle Mechanics - bar ends / plugs for thick oversized Origin 8 25.4mm straight bar
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I just installed Origin 8 straight handlebars, and the bars (although 25.4mm standard) have a very thick cross-section. I.e. the tube of aluminum they use is very thick. Therefore, my standard bar-ends don't fit. Does anyone know of bar ends that would work with these bars?
'Bar ends' is the term commonly used to describe the bolt-on handlebar extensions common on mountain bikes to give alternate hand positions. Is this what you hope to find to fit your bars, or are you looking for plugs, as you mentioned in the title of your post?
If you just need plugs, consider finding a set that can be cut down with a utility knife - a common style of bar plugs is/was an end cap with a series of flat thin plastic 'plates' that provide friction inside the bar to keep the plugs in. THis style can easily be modified by trimmin the 'plates' to fit inside the thicker bar.
For bar end extensions, buy ones that clamp over the outside of the bar, since this dimension is standard. For plugs, many of the expandable types are smaller, you just have to search trial and error. Start with the plastic types since these tend to be smaller than the rubber ones.
Alternatively, if you're using closed end grips, skip the bar end, and drop a nickel into the grip. This will very effectively cap the bar and keep it from cutting through, and I don't of any bar ends that can be bought for $0.10 a pair.
