the smaller the chainwheel the easier it is to pedal, the bigger it is the harder to pedal. small you dont go as fast, big you go fast. the smaller the freewheel though, its harder to pedal, the bigger is easier to pedal.

so basically, the bigger the difference in the number of teeth the faster you'll go (i think) but the slower youll accelerate. think of a car. when you shift up, you wont accelerate as fast, but youll get a higher top speed.

the smaller u get on the freewheel the smaller you get on teh chainwheel...to keep your same gearing

Actualy if you get used to it a big chainwheel and small freewheel isn't that bad for dirt and a little street. I ride 48/13 and everyone thinks I'm crazy but its fine if you know how to use your weight and I'm only 150 and I still beat my friends with smaller gearing up the hills. But for most people I wouldnt suggest this unless you like racing guys with mountain bikes.

theres this 6 year old that races at my local track and he runs a custom 54t chainwheel w/ a 15t f/w. its insane he hauls so much a**. the most common sprocket used is a 44t and you use a 16t f/w with it. to even the ratio out you usually go down three teeth in the sprocket for every one tooth of the f/w or cog.
44-16, 41-15, 39-14, 36-13, etc...

that is freaking crazy, kinda hard to beleive, a 54-15, i dunno.......
