Found a huge black bike out at the curb today. Nishiki Marina-12 (naturally I can't find any reference to this model on google or e-bay). I'm not certain of the age, but the serial is G0482 - which I'm guessing makes it a 1982.
At this point, I'm undecided about whether to clean it up and sell it, or part it out, but the components seem a little nicer than what I have on a couple of my keepers. It's somewhere between 25"-26" (Chrome Molybdenum - but I don't see an indication of a "name" tubemaker), and there's no way I can even mount this beast. There are a couple spots wherethere is very minor peeling of the paint, but overall it looks to be in good shape. I'll have to get all my horsies groomed and lined up for family pictures tomorrow.
The components are:
Dia Compe brakes
Sun Tour 7 derailleur - F
Sun Tour AR derailleur - R
Sun Tour stem shifters
Mallard alloy hubs
NISI (Cerchi) 27" x 1-1/8 alloy rims
Sun Tour GT dropouts
It was dark and cold when I got it home, and the wife would freak if I brought it inside to examine it more closely.
If anyone has info on how to confirm the date on this horse, or has any insight on where tis fits into the Nishiki pecking order, I'm primed for education.

I don't suppose the hub would work on the Dunelt, eh?
Check the stem, post, and crank arms for date stamps.

Actually, the hub is a 36 too. I suppose I could just swap out the wheels to be consistent between them - even if that's taking a step away from being appropriate. The rims are 1-1/8 though, and the Dunelt has 1-1/4. I'd either have to re-adjust the brakes, or swap them out too. Not sure where that would leave me with the Nishiki either. If 1-1/4 is too wide...
I'm really digging myself a bit of a hole. I just won a bid on a 1978 Super Course - which is what I REALLY plan on using for my primary ride. It looks pretty good, but if there are any derailleur problems, I could pilfer from the Nishiki. If not, I could replace the Derailleur on the Follis (my son's bike). Come spring (if not sooner), the Nishiki (what's left of it) and the Grand Prix will find new homes. The Superbe will be restored to its original glory, and I will rule the universe with a firm, but benevolent hand... :D

The last two digits of the serial number have nothing to do with the model year on Nishiki. However, you may be close with your estimate as the SunTour AR derailleur was released in 1981. I suggest you start checking component dates using the information on the Vintage-trek website. Let us know what you find.

I dragged the bikes out for pictures after church, but I wasn't quite up to playing mechanic with my good clothes on. Here are a close-ups of a couple details. This should give some idea of the size. I'll add a full body shot once I can figure out how to manipulate images to give me decent resolution and small enough file size.

I usually make the pics I post 800 pixels wide, 72 dpi, and save them as JPG files. They end up around 150 to 200 Kb.
I did some more research and everything points to an entry level model, circa 1981-1982.
1. The AR derailleurs were introduced in 1981.
2. The Nishiki headbadge had been replaced by decals for 1983 at the latest, according to old ads.
3. I have a database with specs for 65 Nishiki covering a period of 22 years. The closest match is a 1983 Sport entry model for $160.00 US. It had a CrMO frame, AR derailleurs, Maillard hubs (the only model in my data base to have them), 27" rims, stem shifters and Dia-Compe sidepull brakes and 10 speeds. Most entry models evolved form centre-pull to sidepull brakes, implying that the Marina is earlier. However, the presence of 12 speeds on the Marina indicates a step or two up the model line-up. The Maillard hubs seems to be unique to the early '80s, corroborating the era.
If you want to dig deeper, start checking date codes using the information on the Vintage-Trek website. However, check as many components as possible, as some may have been swapped out. The more components you find from the same year, the higher your confidence in the year of manufacture. Please post what you find. Thanks for the tips. If I hadn't visited Vintage Trek, I would still be completely clueless. I can easily check the dates and let you know. I also see a sticker for a LBS on the frame. It might not mean that they sold it, but when I happened to pop in for a coincidental first visit there yesterday before the salvage, they were tremendously helpful. If they did sell it, they may recall something useful.
