Hello everyone, I had a nasty spill on Thurday--lowsided while taking turn at a high speed. My face absorbed almost all of the impact and an ambulance took me to the emergency room where they stitched me up. My nose is going decidely to the right at the moment and I can't breathe out of my right nostril, so I assume I'll need to get my nose straightened out for both respiratory and aesthetic purposes. I'm probably looking at $1500-$2000 worth of bills at the least. I don't have any medical insurance, and I don't drive a car. I do have liability insurance for my motorcycle (Texas doesn't have no-fault), any chance that will cover me? Probably a long shot.

I don't believe that liability insurance will pay for any of your own losses even if you were riding a motorcycle when the accident occured. However, best to call your insurance agent and ask.

I handled this sort of thing in my father's insurance agency for ten years.

If you have medical or personal injury coverage as well as liability on your motorcycle, then coverage may apply. If you have liability coverage only, then you're probably out of luck.

However, insurance regulations and policy features vary widely from state to state, so what is valid here in South Carolina may not apply in your state. You should call your insurance agent first thing Monday.

That's what I figured. But come on, why shouldn't liability cover the liability that I am to myself?
Oh well, I was back on my bike today (although with a real fat lip and crooked nose) so I can't complain too much.

Although coverage probably will not apply, I still think it's a good idea to call your insurance company next week... just to make sure. Many claims go unpaid because policyholders don't realize that they're entitled to benefits. Your insurance company can't help you if they don't know.

Also, while you're at it, you may want to inquire about medical coverage on the motorcycle policy. It's usuallly a fairly inexpensive add-on, but it could really help if you cracked-up the motorcycle.

I'm not trying to scare you, but we had seventeen bikers killed during the May motorcycle rallies last year here in Myrtle Beach. Although I'm sure you try to ride carefully on both types of bikes, but there's always the little old lady in the big Cadillac...

Thanks, wise suggestion. My motorcycle is am oldie (1978) that I don't ride much. I always knew that I was more likely to get hurt on the non-motor bike. I am extremely, extremely careful on the motorcycle--on the bicycle I like to go as fast as I possibly can. I must embarassingly admit I wan't even really going anywhere when I crashed. I was killing time in the station parking lot waiting for my train by going as fast as I could, carving up corners.

I'll check my insurance company and see what the deal is, if medical coverage on my motorcylcle would cover me on the bicycle too, then I'll look at it as a steal.
