Found a Raleigh Grand Prix mixte at the dump today and rescued it for $5. Has a taco'd rear wheel and could use the usual TLC, but is pretty nice, overall. I'm guessing I can easily clean it up and sell it in the fall (live in a college town). How much can I get for her?

My only hesitation is that I personally ride an earlier ('73) Grand Prix roadbike and am VERY tempted by some of this bike's components -- cotterless cranks, Suntour retro-friction shifters. Would the cotterless crank swap on directly to my GP's bottom bracket? More important, would I be benefitting more in the long run by flipping the bike or by using it to upgrade the parts (cotterless cranks for old Raleighs are tough to come by, to my understanding)?

It IS a very nice looking bike deserving of a second life, so whatever I do, rest assured it won't go back to the dump.

It's true that Raleigh cottered cranksets used a different threading (26 tpi) than standard English 24 tpi, but I *believe* all the cotterless cranks used standard English 24 tpi threading. So no, that wouldn't help you. The Suntour friction shifters are by no means rare, either, so there's little point in substituting this one's unit (which would render the mixte incomplete). On balance I would say the best bet is to fix the Mixte up and sell it.

BTW it looks to my uneducated eye that the front fork is slightly bent.

I'd fix it up and sell it, I have a large Mixte frame Raleigh for sale right now and fully expect $180.00 out of it but price will vary by market so you might get more or less for it.

I had a late 1970s Raleigh Record Ace with cotterless crank, and it had the oddball Raleigh threading.


+1 Clean it up and flip it, it will bring good money.
