Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - new guy with questions

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm obviously new here so I need some info on purchasing my first bike. I'm 6'1" with a 30" insteam, and 280 lbs. I'm a police officer and my department will let me ride a bike if I buy it myself. I have a $700 budget. I have been looking at the Trek 4300 w/disc, Fuji patrol bike, and the Fuji Nevada 29er. I don't know a whole lot about bikes, so any suggestions will help, thanks

Jace - welcome, you'll get lots of help here. Can you describe what your needs in a bike will be as a police officer? Where will you be riding? What will you need to carry with you? How long will you be on the bike daily? Will you be riding to work also, or will you drive to work and ride during yoru work day?
I'll be mostly riding on sidewalks, up/down hills, and gravel roads. Very small town, maybe 2-3 miles a day. Won't really need much equipment on the bike as it will be close to my patrol car at all times. I'll be riding it at home also around some small trails. I won't be riding it to work, its a 40 me trip one way, Haha

Who are you going to buy it from? If it's a local shop, they're liable to be a dealer for one of those companies and not the other, and that will narrow it down.

If the bike is spec'ed like one of these http://www.cannondale.com/bikes/recreation-urban/law-enforcement/law-enforcement/2011-law-enforcement-3 then you're good to go.
