Hybrid Bicycles - My new Trek 730

I picked a 1997 Trek 730 that I had been looking at on Craigslist tonight.

I'm curious to hear what folks think about the condition of the bike and if anything bad jumps out at you.

I need to get reflectors all around. Also need to pick up a U-Lock and kickstand. Ideally I want to get a rack and some fenders on, some lights, and make it my commuter.

This should be a good commuter for you. I almost picked up a 720 for commuting (off of Craigslist), but it was too small for me. Looks to be in good condition. Is the stem a good fit for you? It looks maybe a little long to me for the size of the bike. If you are comfortable and don't feel too stretched out on it, you should be good to go. In my case, It took me three stems to get the handlebars in the right condition.

I have this exact bike, only in off-white with green decals. I bought mine in 1997, have taken very good care of it, and it still looks great. This is a wonderful bike, and even though I've bought two other bikes since (sold my 2010 Specialized Vita Comp after one year of ownership since I didn't like the feel of the aluminum frame) I still love the ride of my old Trek.

I have a '91 720 and I love the bike. Old steel is
the best ride there is.

Mine is a lit smaller, but has a extra long seat post so it works for me.

After you ride it a while, you will be sold!

Thanks! I haven't pulled the seat post out too far yet, but I have a feeling it's fairly large.

I'm looking forward to taking it out on it's maiden run to work tomorrow.

I still need to pick up a lock, lights, and reflectors. For now it will come in the office with me and stay in my apartment. (Although it's a pain since I have a 3rd floor walkup with some narrow staircases.)

Multi-Tracks are great! We have a '95 720 (mine) and a '92 700 "His"/"Hers' pair, and we love them! Nice upright riding position, operates smoothly, moves quickly enough, and climbs steep hills with ease.

My 720 ... still looks like new!

What does the multitrack nomenclature mean?

Looks nice. Love the green. I'm running a 21" 91 750 (Lugged Steel!), have had it for years & it's the only bike that seems to stick around.
I've used it for shopping, commuting (10 miles) & general knocking around.
My only regret is that the early ones didn't have mid for braze on's & I can't find a 1" threaded fork with 'em to replace it with.

my trek 730 is now 20 years old and I love it. best bike I have ever had.

I envy you. I shouldn't but I do. Looks new. Hopefully it fits you.

I just got back into riding after many years off and I'm currently using a Trek 7.2 FX. I rode a LOT back in the 90's and the bike I was using then was a 1995 Trek 730. I still look back at that bike with a ton of nostalgia. I've thought about looking into whether I could swap the newer components from my 7.2 to that old steel 730 frame. Don't know that it would be worth the effort but it sounds tempting.

It's on loan to my dad until he tires of it and he took this picture, at my request, just yesterday. I reversed it because the standard for bicycle photography seems to be with the bike facing to the right of the frame and he took the photo with the bike oriented in the other direction.
