Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Give me a "brake"

I recently swapped out the cheap Tektro disc brakes on my recumbent for Avid BB7s. It's quite an improvement, but the shop didn't do a great job getting things adjusted.

Ever since being back on the 'bent, I've felt a lot slower. I was cleaning and lubing the bike yesterday when I noticed the the front brake was dragging - A LOT.

Adjusting the pads wasn't enough. I had to loosen the caliper bolts and recenter the caliper, then adjust the pads. Bingo! No more dragging.

I'm heading off for a 100K ride shortly. Will I still feel horribly slow? Were the brakes making that much difference? I'll know later.

Hopefully you got the thing fixed and you won't have issues with them. I have the BB7's on my mountain bike, they can hold my fat butt on an incline, really do love them. I would think you will be ok now without the drag.

"Ever since I got back on the bent".............How long has it been? For safety reasons and good practice, I check the brake centering before each ride. :thumb:...and never rely on anyone else to do things right, always double check before the ride.. :D

The 'bent had been sitting in the basement for a while, except I took it to the shop for new brakes then started riding it. The caliper position of the front disc brake was off when I brought it home from the shop.

It's a little irritating as the shop is good, and the mechanic is a friend of mine.

I wasn't familiar with the new BB7s until I realized there was a problem, then a learned how to adjust them. Google is a wonderful way to find the needed information. :)

I completed the 100K populaire (sort of like a brevet) with six minutes before the cut-off. I had no bike issues and only minor motor issues.

6 minutes, or 60 doesn't matter.

I was just told that a brevet is more like a "long individual time-trial" and that we stopped too much. Bleh. Maybe I'll keep moseying along taking pictures.

There are no rewards for finishing a brevet first; there are no penalties for finishing it last, with scant minutes to spare.

There are those randonneurs who take perverse pride in finishing rides with little time left. Take time to smell the roses and enjoy the scenery; if the ride isn't fun, why are you riding?
