Mountain Biking - front brake detangler

i got a front brake for my p.1 a while back, and i mis the bar spins. i've seen that some people like chase and march send the cable through the stem and steerer tube. i want to do this and was wondering if any one had info on this. how much would it cost what parts do i need?

You need a star fangled nut that uses a drilled out bolt...13$ would be the cost I would assume

I dont think you can do that witha threadless headset. Only with the threaded like on BMX, which is what i have on mine.

or just buy one...there is another way...use a standard starfangled nut. Drill through the top cap, knock out on of the 'fangleds' and run your cable through.

Why is that?

cause you are breaking one of the wings of the star fangled nut. In order to get it tight again you would need to repress a new starfangled nut in.

well, there is always the free option of ditching the front brake...that aside, get creative with cable routing.

That makes sense.. I've not actually bothered to look and see what the starfangled nut looks like, so I wasn't completely sure what you were referring to. Doesn't sound like such a great option in my opinion. Ditching the front brake doesn't sound too hot either.. lol. I'd just deal with the brake cables the way they are

Personally I just put a huge hoop on my front brake. That allows me to do bar spins. The drilling a hole option, while it works, is definately not ideal.

You really don't need a starfangled nut and topcap. What you could do is use a compression plug in order to preload the headset. Then after tightening the stem clamps, you can remove the compression plug and topcap and just run the brake cable through the hollow steerer. BTW, what kind of front brake are you using? This of course works easier with discs.

A compression plug is generally used in forks with carbon fibre steerers because a starfangled nut would best be termed a star-mangling nut in such a case and would cause major damage to the inside of a CF steerer tube ultimately resulting in delamination and or cracking. They look like this:

Okay, i get it. Sound like a pretty good idea: just to use the stem to keep the steerer tight once it has been tightened using a compression plug, and then just run the cable thorugh the steerer tube. Cool, i'll remember that incase i ever turn into a DJer. Haha

I don't see why not. BTW, what are you going to do about the rear brake? Or do you not have one?

the rear brake has a long cable on it and can be turned 360 to the right and like almost 720 to the left. lots of bmx bikes have long cables like that.
