Touring - Hiker-biker sites on the east coast?

Some friends and I are planning on doing the top half of the atlantic coast route in August. Some campgrounds, at least, are already booked.

Anyone know if many campgrounds have hiker-biker sites, or is this going to be a problem for the whole trip?

(*loved* hiker-biker sites on the west coast).

Are you following the AC route? If so check their maps.

I haven't toured much in the east, but my impression was that the east coast was less bike friendly than the west or middle of the country. My guess is that it will be like that for much of the trip. You might try warmshowers.org and maybe couchsurfing.org.

I've never seen biker sites on the east coast, except the ones near hiking locations of the Appalachian Trail (AT) where bikers can use the same hostels as hikers, but not sure how close you'll be to the AT. Of note is "The Place" in Damascus Virginia, but I guess you won't be any where near there.

However, all those places are hostels, not campgrounds. I've done a few tours around the east coast, but never seen bike-friendly camping spots. Most of my trips was just with a regular road map, but one was using AC route/maps.

As far as I know, the "hiker-biker" arrangement is dominant on the West Coast and essentially non-existent on the East Coast.

You'll need to plan ahead and make reservations. While you're at it, you can always explain that you're cycling and find out their policies and how much latitude they'll give you.

BTW, this issue of places to stay is just one of the reasons that I have not toured in the east other than at the end of the Trans America. I have never needed to make a reservation in the west or the plains unless you count calling ahead to a host to let them know when we were arriving.
