Road Cycling - Bike Shorts for guys with big thighs
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Now my thighs do not look like the All Blacks, but they are large and muscled. So large and muscled that my current shorts are becoming too tight and are starting to come apart at the seams. My current shorts are not expensive, space age shorts. They are REI brand cause it is what I could afford.
I am looking to get a few more pairs and would like some assistance. I commute and may start to race.
I have no experience with bibs, just shorts. If one is perceived to be "better" than the other please let me know.

Either your shorts are too small for you or the quality of your shorts are crap. The shorts stretch really well and it should not come apart at the seams.

Bibs > Shorts.
I don't think your shorts are coming apart because your legs are too big, I think it's either because they're too cheap or too small.
Regardless, Performance's high end and Voler make the best standard bibs out there for the $. Don't get hung up on the $200+ offerings out there. I don't doubt that they're somehow better than normal stuff, but you aren't missing out on anything magical.

i actually had a thread on this a few months ago.
i have a thick body type. 32 waist, but my booty and thighs made me wear 34, after a few months of Starting Strength i have to wear a 36 in a lot of shorts now.
thought about buying custom or hopefully finding a track cycling store, but...
Performance Ultra II bibs or shorts work. the new model (II) have a wide band instead of elastic band. try them out.
