Bicycle Mechanics - Canti brakes with no cable hangers???

i just got a frame what i'd like to build for some fixed gear road/single speed cx action. problems is that it's a older frame, maybe 1998 and it doesn't have a cable hanger for the rear brake.

the frame and fork have canti mounts (it is a cyclocross frame after all), but the rear frame has no cable hanger on the rear. the seat tube is allso lugged, so i can't use one of those hangers that you use as a seat collar/hanger like the lemond frames use.

also, do they have cable hangers for the front for use with threaded headsets???

Actually, older frames were equipped with cable hangers.......pre V-brake. I don't know what you can do about the rear but you can easily install hangers on threaded headsets.

Another favorite of mine is www.aebike.com, which I believe allows you to search the entire QBP bike catalog. QBP is "the" bike parts catalog for pretty much every bike store out there. Not the best prices, but it shows you what's available.

Doesn't whether you need a hangar depend on what type of brake you actually use? For instance, my Giant Cypress has cantilever bosses. It came with Shimano v-brakes which I replaced later with Avid Shorties. Both mount on the cantilever bosses, but do not require hangers as the cable stops are built into the brake mechanism, like modern caliper road brakes. My old Schwinn Voyageur has old-fashioned, what I suppose are true center pull cantilever brakes that use a straddle cable and yoke arrangement. These do use hangers. So if you plan to use more modern "v-brakes" I don't think you will need hangers. If you plan to go retro with straddle cable and yoke you will.

There is no "built-in" cable hanger on the Avid Shorties cantilever brakes. Any cantilever brakes will require a cable hanger. For the front, cable hangers are available for both threaded and threadless fork steerer tubes. For the rear even if you have a lugged frame without a seat collar you can still put a cable hanger on the seat-post bolt - no problem - as suggested above. There are also clamp-on cable stops which can be mounted on various frame tubes, but these are more useful for caliper or linear-pulls (aka Shimano V-Brakes).

Your LBS will have or be able to order any number of rear cable hangers that will work with a lugged seatpost bolt/clamp set-up (The same is true of the required stem and/or heatset mounted hanger). It's possible to successfully install canti's and the necessary hangers on any frame/rigid fork combination that has the correct brake bosses, like your 'cross frame. Good luck!

And I used a cast alu bolt on fork crown stop that was THE best compared to any stem clamp. the lower the stop and more solid, the better.

why not just run v-brakes?, they work a bit better than canti's, don't need stops and have a cleaner profile.

In my experience, canti's are lighter and linear pull brakes don't work very well with road levers unless you use a "problem solver" gadget (Which makes them even heavier and complicates the installation of cables).

..ya, I swapped out my levers.

Though..I was running canti on my small tubeset Ritchey and used to get a flex rear tri when clamping hard. the V- work much better.

Nobody makes a lever for drops to pull V-s? that seems unlikley..though i've never gone looking.
