Pacific Northwest - Bike stolen at STP beer garden

My wife did the STP last weekend. She finished in one day and went to the beer garden with her friends around 8:20pm. She put her bike down with the hundreds of others there. 45 minutes later she came back and her bike was gone.

It was a Cervelo R3 that we'd just upgraded to a DuraAce drivetrain.

Any leads, ideas or just sympathy would be appreaciated.

No leads, but very sorry to hear. That completely sucks. Start checking craigslist. There were definitely some non-bike characters roaming around the festival when I rolled in at 8:45.

Sorry to have the joy you and your wife must have felt in doing the STP in a day, dampened by some jerk/thief.

Holy crap! That's not a $150 bike, either! Sorry to hear about your wife's loss. Ouch.

Keep an eye on Craigslist, and look for individual parts, not just the whole bike.

People told me I was paranoid when I refused to let my bike out of my sight at or after the Chilly Hilly. They said no one would be stupid enough to steal a bike at an event like this, or from the ferry. For whatever it's worth, your experience will keep my eyes on my bike.

That blows, so sorry to hear this. Portland is really bad for bike theft, can never be too careful with a nice bike like that. Its strange that I made a comment about this reality on Sunday after I finished the STP. There were literally hundreds of multi-thousand $ bikes leaning against trees/tables/fences/portapottis - all unlocked. I commented that if I wanted to steal a high-end bike the scenario is perfect. Happy and distracted owners and bikes literally falling out of the trees.

The UW start line was the same scenario too - I locked my Roubaix in the cab of my truck until go time.

I'm so sorry to hear about the theft. I always wanted to live in a place where I didn't have to lock my bike up, then I took a job in Lubbock, TX and decided to be careful what I wish for in the future.

Seriously, maybe the STP organizers should consider a Bicycle Valet service at the starting/ending points. They could even make a few bucks off of it, charging a small fee. If I had an expensive bike, I'd be willing to pay a couple of bucks to have it looked after at the celebration end of the ride.

Sorry to hear this. I have almost the same bike... a Cervelo R3 w/Dura Ace... and I have been a bit on the "paranoid" side when leaving it unattended at the STP finish line. I guess my fears aren't entirely unfounded.

There was a bike corral at the Doubletree that anyone could use. I remember seeing mention of it in the ride guide, but it wasn't very prominent.

I agree! I lock my bike up always. Or have a paw on it at all times in public. Yet, even so, a thief will find a way no matter what! However, an easy pickings bike is the better choice, no lock, no bother!

I am sorry for the rider's loss. It's almost like having one's child kidnapped. Well, maybe not quite! Depends on the character of the kid. Some might even say good riddance.

For what it's worth, I'd take my bike with me or skip the event before I left it with a valet, even a free one: "Oh, look at that. I left my bike with you, and now there's a crack in my $3,000 frame."

That sucks that it was stolen but come on, do you leave your wallet with $5,000 of cash laying on the ground when you take a dip in the pool?
