hey everyone
i just had a question regarding the dilemma i am in. i am currently in the process of looking for a hybrid bike. i was looking at the trek 7.3 fx disc, specialized sirrus, and then i came across this bike.. http://www.feltbicycles.com/USA/2011.../BROUGHAM.aspx

i know its a fixed gear but they do offer a 3 speed version. i am looking to commute maybe 5 miles each way to work and wanted to know your thoughts on these types of bikes. and which would probably work better? i personally like the styling of the felt over the other two, but again i do not own either types of these bikes. on the felt..i know a fixed gear is a fixed gear...but on the 3 speed does it allow you spin the weheels without pedaling?

i have ridden mountain bikes most of my life, and just sold my diamond back response comp to get a bike that will be more suited for road. i guess you can say i am interested in a road bike, but very hesitant to jump the gun which is why a hybrid seems more fitting at this point in time for me. i do not plan to enter any races..i guess my main concern is that the bike is somewhat fast? i woudl also look into more longer rides than to just my work...again i am a noob at all of this and could use some help.

i think the felt looks really sweet, but forget the fixed gear....i think the 3 speed is somewhat interesting...then i think about the hybrids --are these bikes somewhat fast?

help!

When I got back into bikes after a 12 year hiatus I bought a mountain bike because that is all I ever had. I made the mistake of test riding a few hybrid bikes and had to have one afterwards. I can tell you that any of the bikes you are looking into are going to be WAY faster than the Diamondback. I went with the 7.3 FX because it fit me better than the others, but now I want a full on Road bike. I am going to take my time with my next bike, save up, and get what I really want. Have you test road any of the hybrids? Just going from 26in mt bike to 700c road wheels is like puting rocket boosters on your bike in my opinion...

That's a nice looking Felt! Exactly opposite of the black bikes we've been seeing for a while now.

But to compare the Felt to the FX7.3 and the Sirrus, they are all about the same. The all fill the same niche, and the best way to pick between the 3 is to ride them.

Having said that, I have a Sirrus with a carbon fork and carbon stays and Zertz inserts, which help absorb vibration and smooth out the ride without losing any speed. You might want to consider that.

Also check out the quick series from cannondale... http://www.cannondale.com/bikes/recreation-urban/recreation/quick-cx
The quick 4 is similar to the ones you are thinking about.
I have the quick 1. I love the lockout headshock. It's fast when I need it to be fast, and it's comfortable when I need that!!!

The 7.5FX is a very nice bike, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I was in a similar position as you, and tried all the bikes you mentioned except the Felt. I was most at home on the Quick 3.

Though I'm aware that the OP has ended up with a 7.5 FX, the answer to the question about the fixed 3 speed is no- you still have to pedal. Or at least that's my understanding...
