Currently in Columbus, OH, but I wanna get the hell out of here. Need to find a job and a place to live. What parts of Asheville should I look at and what parts should I avoid? I'd like to be able to walk or bike to most places I need. My current apartment search is revolving around the Whole Foods on Merrimon Ave, heh.

Naw. I've been in central Ohio for 27 years. Time to see something else. The summer's been a big pile of crap. Need a nice fresh start.

Get an extra bedroom or two. I'll bring some hikers down for trips to the Smokey Mountains and we'll need a place to crash just before and a place to shower coming out. :thumb:

We'll bring the beer. :)

I would love to live in Asheville NC. Nice mountains nearby (Mt. Mitchell), and I like to climb.

Asheville is sort of full of weirdos. Problem is... with weirdos you generally find good beer. The sacrifices we must make for good beer....

I have no problem sacrificing for good beer! And maybe I'm a weirdo, too?

Heh. I'm at least 50% German and I'm not into Schmidt's. Or German food in general, really. Hate saurkraut. I'm a bad German.

Just got here last Sat. Other stuff you should know about biking around the Greenville area:

I've seen few bike lanes. And the roads I've encountered have little to no room for bikes. The main drags through residential areas (at least around my apt) are 35mph speed limit. I hope this is the exception. Get out in the sticks and it's pretty much as safe as anywhere else. The area has been growing like mad for 10+ years. The Swamp Rabbit Trail is a step in the right direction. I hear that will be expanded.

asheville is nice, i like it, job market sucks. What field are you in?

ballistic

Not really in any field. I have a Creative Writing degree. It's like going to school to master a hobby. So I'm pretty open. My only job lead so far is in Sterling, VA, where I have an interview next week.

I'm Born and raised in Greenville, and have had a bricks and mortar business location in Asheville since 1987.

they are both great places.

I don't know the actual stats, but I usually figure that Asheville is roughly six degrees cooler than Greenville.

Asheville and the surrounding areas are one of the most beautiful I have been to.

As a tourist destination, Asheville employment has always been tight - many people move there and take a cut in pay to live in that area.

It's a great town - I personally would probably live closer to Brevard, or hendersonville.

I have often wanted to move there, but family and friends are too many here in Greenville, family considerations quite strong.

Greenville interior is not kind to road cyclists although the swamp rabbit trail is about fifteen miles long, joggers, walkers, etc are numerous - most of the bikers start downtown at the Linky Stone childrens park and go 10+ miles to Travelers Rest. There are no signs, but I believe the Swamp Rabbit has a speed limit of 25 or 20 that so far is not enforced -

I've only been back to riding for a couple of weeks, so am not that up on biking. But here, I have no desire to ride a bike on the road with cars. Sloppy drivers.

Asheville has great restaurants and more of a artist/craftsman base than Greenville does, but Greenville is growing.

Asheville stats don't quite tell the story - Asheville is basically a market town for the six surrounding counties, and has a good bit more to offer than it appears.

The mindset of public officials in Asheville is somewhat "green" and a little more costly because of that.

I've only driven thru central Ohio and that was a long while back. Even so, I would imagine that moving to Asheville from there would be like breathing a lot of fresh air.

If you can work independently of the geographic area you live, I say go for it. Asheville is a delightful place.

Greenville is becoming a little too large to suit me - even so the downtown scene and night life, restaurants etc are very nice.

Greenville will be hotter and more humid but is closer to the beach, and can run up or down I 85 to charlotte and Atlanta.

Great part of the world.

In all honesty, parts of the summer in Greenville at times can be brutal, but usually gets better after several weeks, while Asheville gets snow more than we do - which is not that often here, but say 4 to times a year in Asheville. Probably some of the folks in small towns around Asheville still don't have Air Conditioning. they would have it if they lived in Greenville

HTH

ETA probably much easier to find a job in the corridor Spartanburg, Greenville, Anderson

Wow, thanks for all the info.! Asheville still seems to be my top choice, but I'll have to see how Sterling, VA pans out. I'm not in a position where I can pack up and go somewhere without a job lined up. One huge downside to Sterling is the cost of living with its proximity to DC and such.

For sure, and I plan to. My ex is moving there about the same time I'm moving to Sterling. Hopefully we can arrange some visits before winter hits.

you're on better terms with your ex than I am with my ex.

I tried, but the only way it works is "no contact" once the kids were grown.

Not hating on Asheville, just not my thang.
