I would think that's obvious. It gives the puller something to grab. Ingenious.

then you scrap the arm... UBT sells a tap to put an oversized ring in,

I really want one of those tools but would never use it enough.

the OP stripped the removal threads. there is no reason to re install the crank. IMHO if you put that back on a bike your just going to flip your an *** for doing so.
the Zip tie is a great idea. I found just wrestling the puller into place (I was doing a drive side) was the hardest part.

Stein and Var both make such an animal. I have the Stein version and a puller to go with it, and it works great.
They also supply self extracting bolts in m24x1.5, which is the thread size you end up with.

we may have to talk. I have two OK Ofmega cranks sets off Bianchis that I will never use, but if I had them retapped and self extractors I would fee comfortable selling them if only for the cost of the work and the extractors.
