To answer the OPs question. There are lots of specs involved, but start by sorting out the basics.

Threaded or unthreaded style
If threaded, what thread
Fork steerer diameter 1", 1-1/8" or other

I suggest you read a bit about the various headset types here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headset_%28bicycle_part%29) to start on the process on figuring our what you need, or at least how to describe what you have now.

If you have a typical threadless headset in 1-1/8" life is easier because there are fewer permutations, and 99% are the same.
