Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Video & pics of steep climb from one of my most difficult rides ever

Did one of the most difficult rides I have ever done. It was only 41 miles, but it had 5,472 feet of climbing. I climbed Mosquito Road in Placerville from Broadway to Rock Creek Road, then took Rock Creek Road to Chili Bar, where I turned around. The climb back up Rock Creek Road seemed to go on forever, but finally it ended and I got to enjoy a fun descent down Mosquito to the river and back out of the canyon. Good steep fun! Yes, I mean the climbing.

I also ended up with my second A & S type of video. A silver Toyota Tacoma, CA license 8S64255, passed while I was climbing back up Mosquito Road to Placerville. Somebody in the truck yelled "Get off the road!" This is in spite of me being on the right side of the road, out of the way.

That same truck passed me at an unsafe speed on the climb up Mosquito to Rock Creek Road. That was also caught on camera on the sufferfest video. The yelling incident is a separate video.

This is the first time I have had a problem with a driver in the Sierra foothills. If you ride in the Placerville area, watch out for this jackass!

Luckily, the footage I got at the top of the climb back up Mosquito to Placerville made up for the BS. As I approached the top, two fawn ran across the road and jumped the fence. A car caught up to me at the stop sign. The two guys inside struck up a conversation when they saw the deer also. One of them asked me if I rode down to the river. When I told them that I did that and rode down Rock Creek to Chili Bar, they were impressed. You can see the deer going down the road in front of me on the video as I'm talking to the two guys.

I told them they made up for the motorist who told me to get off the road earlier, and thanked them.

Here's a picture of the first 18% switchback I saw during my descent from Placerville. I measured it on the climb back up by riding into the steepest part of the switchback, which I normally don't do a lot of on long climbs, in order to conserve energy.

Great job on the climbs - beautiful countryside!

As for the moron in the truck. I have had many similar incidents. 90% of the time they drive a truck, 100% of the time its a male and they ALWAYS speed away. Its an interesting case study. A definite pattern.

Unfortunately I can't read most of the sign, so I can't find out the company name and phone number, but the area code is legible-530.

I've taken Mosquito Road to the bottom via my motorcycles and thought the road dangerously narrow. But to do it under power of pedal on a bicycle, with little room (if any) to accelerate out of a situation.... well, I guess it's your choice. It's a beautiful road, and I might hafta take the Suzuki up there again soon.

About your videos,
either I have the attention span of a beagle, or I have no interest in listening to somebody huff & puff as the scenery/subject matter takes a few minutes to change. I tried filming my motorcycle rides, but they simply are not interesting UNLESS
* I have another motorcycle in front of me for the viewer of the video to watch,
* the scene changes often and fast,
* edited to include a clip of the wheel spinning, levers being shifted into gear, the sides of the road rushing by,
* point-of-view angles changing frequently,
* some music laid over the occasional sound of my motorcycle engine,
* and ANY number of other techniques used to hold the interest of the viewer.

Why don't you spend some time taking footage of your wheels spinning, your legs pumping the pedals, shifting gears, an image of YOU on your bike ascending a steep hill, coasting down at high speed, seat on the saddle, hands on the handlebars, etc.
- AND -
buy some editing software to make of your long (and boring) footage, into an enjoyable 2 minute 45 second movie that tells a story by way of a variety of images.

Hey, more power to ya.... but unless or until you can put something together to hold my short interest span, I'm not interested in ten minutes of huffing and puffing and the scenery rolling by at walking speed.......

And yes, I hope someday to be in as good a shape as you to ascend steep hills.

There is one steep hill near me that I just can't get up it I'm not sure what the grade is but it's friggin' steep. I've attempted twice...not only to my legs give out but my lungs are completely exhausted. Both attempts I've had to stop and I'm just gasping for air. One day I'm going to do it though. I've got my mind set on it!

I don't live in fear, so I'm not afraid to ride on a narrow road. I use a mirror and my eyes and ears to keep track of my surroundings.

I personally despise videos that have music completely covering the original audio. Especially climbing videos. I like to show the effort and suffering involved in climbing a hill. Believe it or not, not everyone wants amateur videos to look like a slickly produced TV show. Plenty of people enjoy raw footage and also hate music covering up the original audio. The original audio is part of the story too. If I watched a motorcycle video I would want to hear the engine, not music.

My videos tell the story of what it's like for me to climb these hills when I'm not a Lycra-clad, 6% body fat "super hero".

Since I am busy trying to climb steep hills, I'd rather not have to take a hand off the bars and attempt to aim a hand-held camera at my legs or anywhere else. The handlebar mount allows me to concentrate on the task at hand, which is putting out a lot of effort on a climb.

BTW, I don't have to buy editing software. Windows Movie Maker will do what you ask. I'm just not interested in catering to the TV crowd.

I agree I hate turning on some of these videos and and listening to the C(rap) people put on their videos. I often find myself hitting mute on many videos I watch. I'd much rather hear the huffing and puffing.

+1,000!:thumb: Thank you! I did a climb video up Lake Clementine Road in Auburn earlier this year. The other day I found someone else's climb video up the same road, but they covered it up with ear-splitting heavy metal music, which I muted immediately. I'd much rather hear the effort the guy was putting into the climb. Especially since the captions at the end indicated he was racing another rider up the climb.

:eek: That's a scary thought! With the exception of yesterday's incident, I have found El Dorado County to be one of the friendliest areas I've ever ridden in.

I don't mean to submit these in any attempt to engage in a video war, but one of the below videos might be an example of "raw footage", and the other as a result of spending time on an unfamiliar Mac in an attempt to make a more interesting video. The music doesn't have to be overpowering heavy metal, that shots don't have to require much effort or be a distraction from the job at hand. The videos are however, motorcycle related......
If it's of any consolation though, the 'raw' footage is of a very popular road with bicyclists. It is of Del Puerto Canyon to 'The Junction'....., the other includes Hwy 49 up what we call the Mini Dragon to Mariposa. I have yet to see bicycles on this stretch, but it would be a GREAT stretch of road if you like ascend hills/MOUNTAINS with a beautiful overlook.
--All that I'm suggesting is that you CAN make of your videos something more interesting to watch,
though mine was one of a only a couple attempts to edit (I don't have a Mac).

I liked the raw footage better. The edited one is not my taste in music, and it felt odd watching a motorcycle video with unnaturally quiet or completely muted engine and shifting sounds.

I have plenty of videos with captions in them like yours. Here's one with captions, and not as much "huffing and puffing" due to the climb not being as steep. There's also a conversation between me and other cyclists.

Believe me, I plan on it. The hill I have in mind for this weekend is gonna be a doozy! :D It may be harder than that Snows Road climb I did last month.

The popular cameras seem to be the GoPro and the Contour. Both seem to have muffled or low audio though, and both have no display. I prefer a display, especially when setting up the camera. I don't want it aiming too high or low. I also like to keep track of my battery life so I can change the battery before it runs out. If it runs out during a recording it will corrupt the file.

When I replaced my 12 year old DELL with this ASUS, I bought Montage studio movieBox ULTIMATE editing software, with gizmos for recording my old VHS tapes, DVDs, etc. I haven't opened the box yet...... Any attempts to record on the motorcycle have not met with my expectations, as the wind noise is VERY problematic. When I mounted a MiniDV camera to my gas tank, I actually made a little fairing pakced with cheesecloth to protect the microphone from wind noise..... But that is waaay too big a camera to have mounted on the motorcycle. GoPro and Contour still haven't addressed the wind noise problem yet. I think I need to be able to use an external microphone to isolate it.

Waaaay too much work editing a video, somebody will always hate your selection of music, and most would rather read a good book then sit through what you enjoyed while filming it.... kinda a 'hadda been there' thang. But I have the software, and someday a camera, and I'll give it a shot again... someday.

Well, for what it's worth, I didn't notice an excessive amount of wind noise on your raw motorcycle video. You got a couple thumbs-up on it too, so other people appreciated it as well.

2. I'd stop by the sheriff's office w/ the video, the plate # and the fragment of company name and report the dude for reckless driving or whatever. The cops may not be able to charge him, but they can stop by the company office w/ the time & date details and tell them to that they should remind their employees to share the road or they'll wind up in prison being passed around for a pack of smokes.

Unfortunately the company name is not legible, only the area code. It's a magnetic sign like what pool and landscaping guys put on their trucks. If the entire phone number had been visible I would have been tempted to call it to report it. Knowing my luck though, I would end up talking to the jerk himself and he'd cuss me out and hang up on me.

Also, I'm not sure he broke any laws. Unfortunately it's not against the law to act like an ass in public. I don't know what the speed limit is on that road. He did slow down further down the road.

I was on my longest ride yet a few days ago (only 30 miles), and I couldn't have been on a wider shoulder than the one I was skirting along on Hwy 12 outa Lodi, CA. In fact, etched into the concrete were zipper type bumps that create a heck of a lotta road noise in the cab of a car. Beyond the bumps was MORE shoulder, and I was well within the inner shoulder.... Tired, 25 miles under my belt (belly), low on electrolytes, and a little store just a 1/4 mile ahead (I bought some'n tonight to address an electrolyte problem should I allow it to happen again).
Fighting the onslought of the wind, feeling rather punk, I heard road noise from the HUGE tires coming at me from behind. The big black raised pick-em-up long-bed truck crossed OVER the white line, onto the zipper bumps, and before buzzing me, hit his air horn with perfect timing...... and if THAT wasn't enough, his partner in another (smaller) pick-up truck did the same with his (by comparison) anemic sounding horn just feet from me......

For the last two days I've studied every raised pick-up truck, driving or parked, for the decal that was on the offending party's back window. I finally had to let it go; I was creating needless grief for myself than that harrowing sound of an air horn in my left ear as I was being buzzed the other day.

(Oh, that raw video that I linked to.... that didn't have much noise.... That was filmed with a water resistant, shock resistant, little pocket camera on which I taped over the microphone and placed it behind the fairing/windshield of my motorcycle. Not bad for having been attached to the handlebars on a rather bumpy road!)

Believe me, I'm long over it already. Honestly, I have no desire to drive all the way to El Dorado County to report something that probably isn't illegal anyway. Cops are paid to enforce laws, not manners. Yes, I am concerned about that guy messing with other cyclists in the future, but unless there is a clear violation of the law I'm not going to waste my time on this matter. Hopefully the video will serve as a heads-up to other cyclists and anyone else who might know this idiot.

That couldn't be a Casio EX-G1 you recorded that video with. I tried one once on the handlebars and it recorded an excessive amount of buzzing noise from the vibration of the camera itself. Horrible!

All this for the purpose of catching an image of those on the road who intentionally want to cause a biker grief, or may in fact be the cause of an accident in front of, behind me, or TO me. I've saved a link to just such a camera, they're around, and they are inexpensive.

My other pocket camera, a Nikon, is not shock resistant or drop proof, and it was prone to electrical noise from the engine, buzz, and vibration. I actually got spectacular results one day hanging my camera in a pouch around my neck while riding..... but it's not advisable to have something around one's neck like that unless it's a break-away.

I actually got spectacular results one day hanging my camera in a pouch around my neck while riding..... but it's not advisable to have something around one's neck like that unless it's a break-away.
I thought about the rear view too. I would need to order another Pedco UltraClamp. I do have another old camera that I could use. I would just need to buy another SDHC card.

I'm looking to capture all types of interesting footage, not just people who may cause me grief, although it's good to record that as a heads-up to others out there who may live in the area. ;) Just during the short time I recorded today I got a few possibly interesting things (gonna have to check it out first and see how it came out).

Here's something interesting from yesterday's ride. I only had to ride a few blocks to see/hear it too. A homeless guy who I see around the neighborhood all the time sang to me as I rode by. He's always very friendly and says hi every time he sees me. If I have cans and bottles and I see him I give them to him.
