Foo - laptop for my girlfriend

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

since my gf has a penchant for using the bed as a workdesk, I crushed her laptop a while ago and ruined the lcd when it was hiding under the covers. now she needs a new laptop (or has, for a month and a half now) and since I haven't been up to date on my computer knowledge, I'm a bit at a loss.
CNET and notebookreviews don't really help all that much since we are just looking for something lightweight, portable and relatively fast for under $500.
The two I was looking at were the HP DM1Z and the Lenovo X120e E350. We don't like stupid shiny bezels or anything. just business-class functionality.
Any other recommendations?
I've got the X120e with E-350.
IMO, it's the best of all the Fuzion 10" and 11.6" netbooks that are offered, because it has the least amount of problems and it's the only one that uses a semi-gloss screen. It's quite heavy for a netbook of this size, but that's because the frame is well built.
be sure to checkout this site: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Compilation-of-Lenovo-X120e-issues-and-solutions/td-p/390061?AID=10458230&PID=1225267&SID=u0t0f0fp0dd0c0s590&CJURL=http%3A%2F%2Fforums.lenovo.com%2Ft5%2FX-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops%2FCompilation-of-Lenovo-X120e-issues-and-solutions%2Ftd-p%2F390061
because it's not flawless.
And yes, the screen viewing angle does suck, but so do all the other netbooks in this price and size range.

Can't go wrong with the X120. A few of our lawyers have purchased them. They are well built.

I personally didn't have much luck with my last HP computer and everyone I have talked to that has owned a Lenovo loved it so I gotta say go with the Lenovo. I've just heard that they are a longer lasting computer and to me that is the most important thing. I would rather have a slightly slower computer that last for 3-4 years rather than a faster computer that only last for 1-2 years.

Keep an eye out for the daily deals on Newegg.
Now you know why the bed is called "the workbench".:)
Lenovo offers discounts and coupons for both consumer and EPP constantly, so you should be able to buy an E-350 X120e for $400.
Otherwise, at the MSRP, it's way too expensive.
I bought mine for $400 when lenovo offered an 18% off coupon.

ha, ran over my GF's laptop a few weeks ago, breaking the screen. it was less than a year old, so i bought a replacement screen online and replaced it for her.
do you have epp access?
for EPP, you just go to their EPP site.
I'm sure the password and link is just floating around on one of those hot deal sites or notebookforums.
