Exploded view of Ultegra brake (174 kb .pdf) (http://bike.shimano.com/product_images/BR/ev_images/BR_6500_EV.pdf)

This is probably going to be tough with just text, but here goes.

After applying my front brake, the calipers don't open as well as they should. They open, but not strongly enough to pop the brake lever all the way back out. I recently replaced cables and cable housing, so I know those are in good shape. I think that things are a little tight between the half-bridge and the left caliper arm (arghh. none of the parts I want to refer to are named in the exploded view). Anyhow, theres a nut on the center bolt that goes between the fork and the half-bridge that looks like I could loosen it and maintain some space for the left caliper arm. It doesn't seem to work. When I tighten the brake assembly to the fork, the return mechanism gets sluggish.

Any ideas?

P.S. I don't think it's strictly a wear or usage thing, the problem didn't begin until after I took the calipers apart to make some other adjustments. :o

you didn't happen to put a ferrel on to the housing that nests into the brake lever did you?

In my 105 dual pivots, the secondary pivot bolt screws directly into a thread on the main arm. The nut on the end is a locknut. If I want to adjust the tightness I losen the nut, tighten the allen bolt, then tighten the nut.

I had this happen to the Exage brakes I used last winter. The salt and sand didn't keep them too happy. Taking them apart and cleaning them, I was able to get the front one to work normally again, but not the rear...

Well, I figured I'd go out and take a pic of mine for you to compare. This is the view from the right (drive side) of the front brake. Sorry it's blurry, but you can still see the spring. My guess is you got the spring in wrong. Of course, I could be WAY off, but figured I'd try. Good luck
