I have an old 1970's-80s Motobecane Super Mirage. Not sure what year it is, but it's just like this one (http://www.flickr.com/photos/26188501@N02/4825335983/sizes/l/in/photostream/) though not a fixie conversion. Downtube shifters etc.

Anyway, something has happened over the years and the bottom of the stem is damaged/ground away and it won't clamp properly any more. The stem is the type with a wedge at the bottom. Is there someplace I can get a stem for this bike? I've read the Sheldon Brown pages about how I may have to sand a new stem slightly to get it to fit, but I'm trying to find a place where I can buy one - I don't see any on Amazon. Thanks in advance!

Measure what you have ..

If too French it needs a 22.0 stem rather than the more standard 7/8" 22.2mm ..

Yeah, I read about that on SB's page - but word on the street is the standard can be sanded a bit to fit just fine.

+1 will have a French stem. Sanding one down is your choice.

Sanding .1mm off of the stem shouldn't be a problem, so I'm not worried about that.

Another question, the new stem will have a 25.4mm handlebar size, any hope of fitting the 25mm handlebars I've got into it? Will a shim or something work?
