He was a kindred soul and the best Norwegian I ever met... we shared a love of old Raleigh 3 speeds, classic road bikes, folders, and our Kuwaharas...
We were just talking about putting in an order for some 451 wheels so we could finish turning his Dawes Kingpin into a folding touring bike...
I was looking forward to Thursday night at the co-op where we would help people with their mechanical issues and he had the best stand side manner and way with people... he always spoke gently and had more patience than most people I ever knew...
I do not believe that anyone ever said a bad word about this soft spoken Norwegian from Minnesota and even though he was far from home he was surrounded by many who called him their friend and was much beloved by all...
I never heard him say a bad word about anyone either...
It is with the greatest sadness and heaviness in my heart that I come here to tell you that my good friend Ian (Helgeson) was admitted to hospital yesterday and passed away very suddenly.
I am told it was due to respiratory distress and know that he had not been feeling well of late but had said nothing about this save for saying he had been quite tired.
This world will be a much poorer place without him... much, much, poorer.
My heart goes out to his family... he was a young man, full of promise, a brilliant scholar, and just a damn fine human being.
And he was a damn fine friend... despite being a Norwegian.
