Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - Not vintage but need an estimate of value

I've come across an approximately 1998 Cannondale Super V700.

Deore LX derailleurs front and back
Deore brakes front and back
Shimano crankset but can't find model name just an A
Mismatched lower end rims and hubs ???
3x7 twist grip shifters (only say Twist Grip, no brand name)
Missing rear shock (owner says he "has it somewhere")
Carbon fiber frame and aluminum everything else

Carbon fiber frame and fork look in good condition, no visible damage, cracks, dings etc.

I know this was a $1,200+ bike at one time, but what would it be worth in its current condition? My interest is more for the components than the bike as a whole but I need to decide if I'd be better off stripping the components I want and selling the frame and fork, or if I should find some decent rims and a shock, sell the bike and get the components I want. Is there a market for this frame and fork? I see complete bikes going for anywhere from $300 to $500 but this one isn't completely original.

Condition is everything can you get pics? why is the shock missing?

if the bike has seen a great deal of use the chain and cassette are likely very worn and need replaced. I would not be suprised to see the chainrings worn too. if I were buying a used MTB for the parts I would be looking for a garage queen.

Cassette shows moderate wear, but as with the wheel, I doubt it is original to the bike. Chainrings in similar condition, don't appear as high end as I would expect on this bike either. This bike was partially disassembled by the owner, a noob who was going to get into riding and didn't. I think what happened is he Googled the model and paid more than the bike is currently worth based on its original value. It now sits in a garage with the wheels off and the rear shock AWOL. I'm not sure just how much he has into it, but I know I'll be offering significantly less, if I make an offer at all.

I'm not familiar with carbon fiber bikes so I'm looking for input from more experienced individuals. I'm mainly interested in what, if any, value the frame and fork would have after I take the components I want. I live in a rural area that isn't big into high end MTB so I'm thinking my market would be limited unless I shipped. I'm hoping that there is a market of individuals who have similar bikes who need to replace or upgrade damaged frames. I've already got a couple parts bikes around so I'm not looking to add to my collection of stripped down frames if it is going to be difficult to find a buyer.

All the 1998 V700s I have found had aluminum frames.

Check completed auctions on ebay, V700 has a decent following. Really depends on condition. Selling locally here? Forget it, ebay would be my only viable option. Realize its a 13 year old MTB, which will have limited interest. MTB buyers tend to want the latest and greatest: disk brakes, etc....

This is one reason vintage MTBs to me represent tremendous value for the buyer. While 13 years old is not vintage, it is old enough to be "outdated".


Wheels that don't match, often = crashed bike. Not always for sure, but it rings alarm bells with me.
