Hi,
Does anyone have experience with the American Classic TriLock threaded headset/ It looks great, and, if I understand the description correctly, it is a no-brainer to install and adjust. However, American Classic has discountinued making them. I'm considering the TriLock for an old touring bike restoration.

What do you think?

The local shops in my area have been having problems with American Classic parts across the board. My suggestion is if you were going to drop the coin on the Am. Classic just get a Chris King - best headsets on the market in my (never so ) humble opinion. Plus their warranty is so good you can send it back to them for an exchange if you don't like the color.

The Tri-Lock was a good idea and, as you say, it looks cool. But, in my experience, it has a rather high fiddle factor. I recommend the new American Classic headset, a Cane Creek S-2, or, of course, Chris King. However, because it's an older bike it probably has a 1" steerer tube, so an excellent alternative is the Stronglight A-9. I use this headset on a number of older road, 'cross, and mountain bikes, and have found them to easy to install, light, reliable, and rebuildable, and they, too, are cool looking. Good luck.

Thank you. I decided to pass on the American Classic TriLock. I should have said that I was looking for a threaded headset. The Chris King ones look beautiful, but too expensive for me. Also, the anodized colors probably wouldn't look right on my traditional style bike.

The StrongLight A-9 looks like a nice piece. Nashbar had it at about $30 last month, although that price may have applied only when you bought a bike frame. Now they don't list the StrongLight at all.

Thanks again.

Silver or black wouldn't look right? http://img81.exs.cx/img81/8174/shrug.gif
