We adopted a 12 month old German Shepard dog, female, in May. She is very smart, and well behaved. Crate training went quickly, and she goes in willingly now. We are currently camping in northern ontario, and she's loving every minute of it.

We are doing puppy classes, and will probably move on to the intermediate class as well. GSD's are working dogs, so they need to be doing something to keep them happy.

Enjoy, Daren

Awww - puppies & babies will get me going every time. Enjoy losing a fair share of your favourite possessions!!! Like kids - if you can't hear them/see them, assume they are up to no good.

Whats with the PINK coller he'll be emotionally scared for life, you have to get him a new collar, A.S.A.P. Something macho like camo or with big 4x4 trucks on it. Cute mutt . Train him from the get go the the bed and rest of the furniture is No Dogs Allowed land, or one night when he's older you find yourself sleeping in his bed for the room.

We have a shepherd/hound mix that's a year older. He sleeps in his crate no problem, but whenever we've left him in the crate while leaving the house, he figured out early on how to muscle his way out of the crate. So.... he's outdoors when we're not home. He has the same look in his eyes that your puppy has; you may have a Houdini on your hands!

I miss having a dog. He's a cutie now... and someday, he will be a big German Shepherd.

thanks guys crating him is kind of a headache because i think he seems to think its a bad place but im not sure. when hes tired i just put him by it and he goes in but other times he protests when hes in im doing the treat thing to lure him in it works he has toys and stuff to keep him busy i dont leave him alone either at least 10 minutes when i go shower but hes always within view. other than that hes a great dog.

We know who'd win that contest. I'd never seen a grown dog go backwards that fast until my kitten racked his nose with his claws.

Our cat tried that to no avail. The cat even got a claw stuck in his eyelid once, and his nose another time. Didn't faze him at all.

He's kind of outgrown it now, but when he was still a puppy he would catch the cat, hold it down, and give it a tongue bath.

Once again, I contend that doggies are all that's right with the world. That's a great looking doggie!

Every new dog to come in our house would invariably end up with a claw in their nose and cease bothering the cat

That would have been one pi**3d cat having been given a bath by a dog!

thats his flea collar its red but the dust from the activator makes it pink.

UPDATE: due to the using the subwoofers(at low volume) in my truck my dog has become indifferent to thunder and lightning

So you blew out his eardrums so he can't hear the thunder?

Congrats on your new pup!
You definately want to train him, though - a few pointers for GSDs. They are a dominating breed, so you want your pup to know right from the start where he is on the pack leadership order. He NEVER sleeps where you do, or where any children you might have do. If you have children, it's important to make sure the dog obeys thier commands, as GSDs will tend to think they're higher in pack order than children. Being higher in the pack order means - to the dog - that it's OK to discipline the peeps who are lower in order than the dog, so watch for that! He NEVER gets fed near your table, nor at the same time you eat. Always make him wait to eat - mess with his food, get in there & remove the bowl for a minute, etc. - while he's small, so that he understands that the food bowl is not his turf and does not develop food-bowl-biting issues. Ideally, you want to be able to take food OUT of his mouth without a problem (good thing to practice with dog biscuits) You also never let him in or out the door before you - if you're just letting him out, you make him sit until you are ready to let him out. Try to teach him to approach people visiting, and to sit - no barking, no jumping. Anyone you don't know will probably not want to mess with him, and people you know, he will know, so there will be no problem. GSDs have big mouths and big teeth, so they really really have to know who's boss! Be careful with him around small children - a playful bounce could hurt a small child, and that wagging tail can knock them over! Also, they tend to obsess on things if they are not properly exercised & played with - the big fellow on the right spends his spare time chasing & barking at birds flying overhead!

This is good for any dog including even the huggable, puntables that are all the rage now.
