Tandem Cycling - cannondale street 8 to 9 spd?

I am changing my 08 Cannondale street tandem from 8 to 9 speed using an 11-32 XT cassette, X.0 twist shifters and X.9 RD. I also replaced the chain (PC-951). The chain will not shift into the 11T cog. I am not able to adjust the RD to line up with the 11T. All parts are new (but cassette), and the der hanger looks good.

Suggestions? Has anyone done this conversion?

Also, just to verify, you do have an entire setup of 9sp items. No 10sp stuff accidentally made it's way onto the bike.

BTW, why are you using a Shimano Cassette? Every Shimano we have run on the tandem died early from bending #2 or #3 sprocket. SRAM cassettes typically are less money and work very well.

You sound like my wife. :-) I'd rephrase it as "I'd suggest you check out a SRAM cassette over a Shimano...."

As for the Shimanos, which cassettes have you used? I've run XT cassettes on my tandem since '01 and each has had the larger sprockets on a spider. I'm not sure how the #2 and #3 sprockets would get bent as the energy transfer is quite far out on the radius of the sprocket. My daughter and I are spinners rather than mashers, so we're also not hard on equipment.

Like your wife, thank you...she must be a wonderful, level headed, easy to get along with, and easily understood person, that loves everyone, and is over the top about riding tandems.

The cassettes we have destroyed were all XT. These were spider types and have the larger sprockets riveted on. Usually they start skipping after a climb. BTW every failure was off-road, but we always bent it straight and finished the ride. These were not failures from extreme mash fests, normal climbing in the mid 80's for rpm. Normally the climb is completed, a shift to more gear is done and it starts skipping. Quick check shows the sprocket folded outward, catching the chain.

FWIW, I've had the XT's bend on single bikes. We run spiderless SRAM stuff with no concerns.

Cable is loose. I can't physically pull the derailleur back into the 11T position. It makes me think I need to space it towards the outside a bit or move the cassette inward.

I'm using a XT cassette because that's why I have laying around in my parts bin. It has worked fine in the past with SRAM components.

This is with the H-screw completely backed out?

Extra spacer behind the cassette?
I removed a spacer when I went from 8 to 9 on our KHS.

I got it worked out. The L screw was restricting the H adjustment oddly enough. Backed L out a bit which allowed the H to adjust.
