Pedal Recommendation?

I'm looking at getting Crank Brothers Candy SL's or the Time ATAC XS. Can anyone share their experiences with either of those.

who ever said you cant use both, you dont have to use them at the same time, your could switch have like mon tue and wed be one and the resat another. just a thought :D

I've owned both pedals and now ride Eggbeaters and love 'em.

The Time ATAC's were great but I wore them out after a couple years on the MTB. They just kept squeaking, even after I replace the cleats. I removed the worn plastic top cover on the pedal thinking that the cleat was rubbing it but it just kept squeaking. Great retention system and mud clearing.

The Candy's were the replacement for the worn out ATAC's. What I noticed first was it wasn't as easy to engage, mostly because the wings rotate within the platform and if it's turned wrong you have to consciously flip to the other side of the pedal or try and rotate the wings with the bottom of your shoe.
The Candy's are pretty fragile too...

I somehow crushed the bearings on a pedal after ony a few weeks use. A call to Crank Bros and I had a rebuild kit the next day. The next ride, I bashed the pedal on a rock (not something I usally do, but never woried about with the ATAC's), and the "wing" (the part that the cleat clips into), tweaked and cracked, no longer allowing me to clip in on that pedal. After closer inspection at my lbs, it seems that on all of the Candy pedals, the "wings" are forged into shape and spot welded at a seam (exactly where they cracked). The Eggbeater's "wings" are cast. there is no seam in the material.

Crank Bros offered to replace the broken parts under waranty or swap out for a pair of Eggbeaters.
There is a reason why Crank Bros offers a rebuild kit... Both the Eggbeaters and the Candy's use the same spndle/bearing system.

Bottom line: I loved my old ATAC's, was seriously concerned about the Candy's durrability and so far really like the Eggbeaters. Of them all, the Eggbeaters are the easiest to engage.
I thought I would miss the platform under my shoe but I don't.

I've used clipless since the original SPD's and Onza HO's. The Times are great if a bit slippery when wet. Also the platform wears out before the metal parts as described above. I currently use Eggbeaters. I would rate them the best at useability while encased in any kind of mud. I've had the Times become unuseable due to mud. The Times are a bit more forgiving of missing the pedal as there is a platform to land on but the pedal is slick when wet. When you miss with the egg beaters it can be awkward, but you learn to be more accurate. Sometimes I wish I had the Times for my mountain bike but that's just too many shoes even for me.

Candy SL's are good I use them. Haven't tried the times and cannot comment on them. I use them on my cross and they take a beating I use them on my my race bike for Mountain biking also.

I have used Look eggbeaters on my road bike for two years and have transferred them to my cyclocross bike. Now I have new Cook Bros eggbeaters on my road bike. As far as I'm concerned, there ARE no other pedals. In the past I've used mostly Look-style pedals with the large plastic cleat. Also Time road pedals. The eggbeaters are extremely light, easy to engage/disengage, highly durable, and require infrequent maintenance. The have a neat system by which the end-cap is replaced by a grease portal into which new bearing grease in injected, replacing the old grease. Slick! The other thing about them is that they have no adjustment mechanism. However, this is because no adjustment is required. On most pedals the cleat is held in by some kind of spring mechanism, which is the adjustable part. On the eggbeaters the cleat is not held in by spring tension, so no adjustment is necessary.

I've used the ATAC XS for about 7 months now of hard riding and I love them now as much as when i first got them. great in muddy conditions, and they have the perfect amount of float for me.

Eggbeaters. Love them. There can't be anything easier to click into than these. Saves valuable secs every time. Good float and great mud handeling.

I like my Times. I use them for cross. Great engagement and sure disenagement. I buddy likes his eggbeaters better. Probably you can't lose with either pedal - so get whichever is cheaper - factoring in whether the platform is an issue for you. I did have engagement problems in a ridculously muddy race once, eggbeaters might be better but I have to say I like my Times.

Thanks for all your comments. I finally decided to go with the Time ATAC XS. They are more expensive and heavier than the Candy's but seem more durable (at least I got that impression, though it's really hard to tell just by reading reviews). Anyways, both seem great but I had to flip a coin.

They are great on the road bike. Allow me to use a pure road race shoe (such as my SIDI Genius II's) or a pair of mountain shoes which I can walk around in while touring or at the rests stops on century rides. The pedals/axels are plenty stiff and I have had no problem with "hot spots" on my foot with either shoe.

egg beaters !!! anything else clogs up in muddy conditions. Egg Beaters clear mud better than any other pedal, platforms etc just make tight spaces for mud and crap to get in.
