tomorrow 13 cyclists are going to court on disorderly conduct charges stemming from a critical mass ride last month. protect your first amedment rights and your rights as a cyclist and show your support at the court house. court starts at 2pm and i believe all involved are going to pleade not-guilty. if they are charged with disorderly conduct they will recieve around $400 in fines. if you live in the corvallis area your support would mean a lot.

thanks and sorry for any spelling errors.

I hate critical mass. it's a joke.

I don't agree with "critical mass" either, but it's okay about your spelling.

I don't see how pissing off motorists helps cyclists.

I don't see how riding your bike is considered "Disorderly conduct".

Oh, wait- this is Corvallis we're talking about. I got harrassed by the cops there just for being in my 20's and walking down the street.

I love your unambiguous prose. It's no joke.

I got charged with disorderly conduct while riding a Critical Mass as well. I got bumped to an Urban Justice panel who, hearing my story, concluded that I had been a victim of police harrassment! I strongly advise these riders to look up the legal definition of disorderly conduct in Oregon State law. Here in Vermont, there has to be "intent" (look that up in a legal dictionary) to be disruptive. I showed up with CM materials describing why "density" while riding is safe... or at least that is the intention.

Good luck, and don't let the curmugeons get you down!

thanks mars, i'll try not to let the IGNORANT cyclists get me down either. I'm sorry, but any person who doesn't STAND UP for there rights as a citizen of this planet deserves to FALL at the hands of the hands of swine. i call it culling the herd, when the oil runs out and you can't escape the chaos i'll consider you "an acceptable loss".

choke on your self.

No probs, dude. i suggest you go to a Borders for an hour. there will be a legal dictionary there and probably a guide on how to defend yourself in court. As i mentioned, look up the definition of "disorderly conduct" in your state and attack the charges on that level. Also, get the deposition from the officer who laid the charges againgst you and check for factual errors.

Sometimes, the cop won't show up for rinky dink charges like this and the whole thing will get thrown out.

In any case, BB, best of luck, and don't let the *******s get you down.

Why I don't ride Critical Mass anymore. Whiny, self righteous wanna-be martyrs.

critical mass is a joke. it does not help at all. it does nothing to further bicycle riders rights, if anything, it pushes them backwards.

you can't get people on your side if your pissing them off.

wtf? by the time oil runs out, we will have a new means of propelling our cars. are you seriously so stupid to think that vehicles are not needed in our society?

I suggest you not use anything that was delivered to you or your stores via a motorize vehicles.

just keepin it real huh? Thanks for making EVERYONE's point about CM...

way to be part of the problem

Then quit road cycling. ANY group of cyclists, whether CM, a USCF road race, a touring club ride, or even two LDS missionaries, annoys some drivers. I don't go on CM rides, but cannot be critical of them for this reason; I've angered as many drivers as they have without doing anything illegal.

pnj

intentionaly pissing off drivers is far different then not intentionaly pissing them off.

some CM rides may be peacefull and work as intended but when I think of CM I think of rowdy punk biker riders riding in and out of traffic and pissing off drivers. remember, the actions of one or two is all it takes.

my58vw

Please define CM. So if I go on a group ride with 15 onterh people riding in the bike lane or with the law does that mean I am violating the law...?!

You should educate yourself about the current oil situation. Oil will never run out, it will just become very expensive to extract, and limited in volume. Oil production follows a bell curve. US was once the largest producer in the world, but our production 'peaked' in 1970~72. We have been in a decline ever since. The world as a whole is about to enter an age of perment decline.

As far as a magic new source of energy, there will be nothing to compare to the energy consentration and ease of use of oil. Sure there will be alternatives, but the 250 hp 'muscle car' will be a thing of the past.

Google 'peak oil'.

Perhaps they are guilty. You seem to indicate that just becuase they were riding in CM they've been falsely accused.

Maybe they're flat out guilty.

how does an "age in permanent decline"

NOT end up with the oil running out?...

pnj

I don't care about the current or future oil reserves. I mentioned that because the other guy mentioned it. my point was, we will always have vehicles. we as a society can not survive without them.

one day our vehicles won't use oil as we know it today. EVERYTHING you buy (with a few exceptions) comes to you via a vehicle.

It's use will be limited by the extreme expense and difficulty in extraction.

http://www.dieoff.com/page197.htm

When you get to the point where it takes more energy to extract than what you will derive from burning the oil, it then becomes useless as a source of energy. It may still be worth extracting for it's chemical properties to manufacture something.

Of course we will have vehicles, most will be Human Powered Vehicles. And these can be used to transport goods.

thank you for making the point that this society needs cars. that is one big reason this society is so screwed up. as far as not buying anything that was delivered in a fuel burning truck, i do take steps to reduce the amount of oil burned/iraqis killed/wildlife destroyed by others on my behalf. for starters i rarely pay for anything. most of what i have is dumpstered or made locally. when i do shop for food i do so at a local co-op not safeway where everything is shipped in on big trucks.

hooray for solidarity! I am appauled by this thread. How can anyone say that CM doesn't prove or accomplish anything. I hate to equate myself with an african american in the 50's 60's, but I will for the cause. I don't think that anyone can argue that they would have the "rights" they have now if they had never stood up for them. I don't think that bicyclists will ever have the "rights" we deserve if we sit by and let ourselves be harassed. I do think that a lot of the CM crowd works adversely to the cause, but the rest of us are making great strides. I dont think there would be one in every major city in the U.S. if it accomplished nothing. I know that everytime I ride my bike I think about how it effects everything around me. This means signaling, stopping wherever cars are raquired to, and being respectful of everyone. I do not think that CM has much to do with oil, though it is a very good point. I see it as an avenue to convey my opinions about bike rights, it also serves as a great way to meet other cyclists in my community. I think that the peaceful, happy, fun rides are the ones that positively affect the community. I sort of de-railed here, so just keep it fun, and always be a good example.
peace

see, conserving oil is the wrong approch. use it all up ASAP. the sooner the better. that way we can get onto using something that isn't so bad for the enviroment.

personally, i don't care about the earth. it will take care of itself, once the humans are gone.

Actually, just assuming we will have "vehicles" is stupid. Hydrogen cells have some serious bugs that need to be worked out. Companies that invested in hydrogen are starting to go under. Hybrids are fine, but still need gas. If you actually follow thru and research peak oil and alternative transportation's limitations, you will find that we are more or less screwed. Dieoff.com is a good thing to read. There are even a couple books I'm aware of on the subject. ONe, which I am in the process of finishing off is The End of Oil by Paul Roberts who writes for Harpers Magazine. But just don't read him. Read everything you can find on it, because opinions vary widely on the subject, since there is no buzzer that goes off when the earth's supplies of oil run short. I recommend doing the research. Especially for those who hate critical mass. Educating drivers is a great alternative to critical mass. The bottom line of the book I mentioned is that because world governments are refusing to begin trying to make energy transition a priority now, the *&#@! is going to hit the fan when oil supplies run low. Energy is the actual basis for the economy. Without energy, consumer goods and necessities can't be transported, farms can't be tilled, and most authors agree that inflation will be the natural result should oil become more difficult to extract. All the easy oil has already been found. Although the melting of the polar icecaps from climate change is going to make arctic exploration possible. Just some food for thought.

Pretend for a moment that you own an orange grove in Florida. If you pack one of those HPVs with food in Florida and then drive in to Minnesota only eating food that you are carrying with you, how many oranges can you sell and still have enough food left to make it back to Florida? HPVs are nice for short trips delivering goods made locally but that is only a small part of commerce.
