I scored an older MTB from my buddies garage (trek 830) and was going to clean her up. The chainrings and chain are a bit rusty as are a few bits of surface rust here and there. I have perused the internet and bike forumes and found many solutions from lemon juice, WD-40 (which I always think is evil), vinegar, CLR and so on.

What do you do to remove rust and not damage components? Any other tips would be awesome. I plan on pulling her apart and working on some bearing soon after.

On chains and chainrings? If I can be bothered - steel wire brush, then oil. Good enough.

WD-40 is good stuff!
