I notice penants along the route, with "2" or "3" on them. Not sure what they were for. They weren't for distance, maybe something to do with the severity of corners? maybe just advertising (for French TV??)? what the heck were they?

nevermind, I went to the official TdF web site and there they are. Mouse-over says "French TV" and they go to the TV station web sites.
hmmmm. I like the idea of 'flagging' corners though to somehow indicate the degree of difficulty or danger.
