Bicycle Mechanics - Escape or not ?

A member of our bike club has two pairs of Campy ergo shifters I am interested in.
They are unmounted, he got them in a trade and wants to sell them.
They both are Daytona shifters with aluminum brake levers. One is 9 speed the
other is 10 speed. I asked if either of the pairs had an escape mechanism and he
doesn't know and like me doesn't know how to tell. Is their anyway to tell from looking at them, and without taking them apart, if they have the escape mechanism ?

The 9-speed won't be as the Escape mechanism was only used on 10-speed. Also, if they are labled "Datona" they won't be as Campy had renamed the group "Centaur" by the time Escape was used in 2007-2008.

The 9 speed is very nice feeling, same than record. The 10 probably is escape, i would go with the 10 only because of the cassettes, are almost everywhere but u can fine 9 speed miche cassettes too. As for the functionality probably the 9 speed can drop like 3 or 4 cogs in one large click and up maybe 3 or 2 just like record does.

The 10 speed probably doesnt do that at all, maybe 2 down and 1 up, thats how escape is. If you arent racing it wont make any difference because you will go 1 cog at a time anyways. If you do racing escape maybe is not an option because is always nice to just get the whole cassette from top to bottom in 2 clicks for example, escape cant do that at all.

Sounds like neither set has the escape mechanism then.

thanks Ultraman, I would prefer the g spring/index gear rather than the escape mechanism though because of
the rebuildability.

Well the part i dont know is if there are parts available for 9 speed, doubt are the same than in 10 speed, what i give you is that the 9 speed will feel like record.

No, "Escape" was a change in the way Campy brifters worked prior to it's introduction and was used on Centaur and below for 2007 and 2008. Before 2007, Campy brifters would let the rider downshift a sweep of about 4 cogs or upshift the entire width of the cassette with one full stroke of the inner lever or mouse ear. Front shifting let you shift completely across all three rings of a triple with a full sweep of either control.

Escape limited rear upshifts to one cog at a time and downshifts remained at a maximum of 4 at a time. Front shifting allowed only one click from the big ring to the middle ring rather rhan the three or four "clicks" needed in the past but lost the easy trim setting and the ability to work with nearly any front derailleur and crank.

Most of us considered Escape to be a mistake and Campy dropped it in 2009. I'm not sure but it may be back under the name "Powershift".

Yup. 2011 Centaur, Veloce and Athena are stupid Powershift. That's why I bought extra 2010 Centaur 10 for future bikes.

Can't you tell if they are "escape" by trying them ? See how many clicks they go in each direction. I don't think you need the cables attached.
