has anyone here tried Insanity and cycling

my plan if all goes well is

1. buy a house...can't do insanity in my apt.. all those jumps would certainly piss off my neighbors

2. do 60 days of insanity and get my damn shirt....lol. If I like it I might do the asylum after

3. continue to ride my bike a few days a week but no structured training while on Insanity.

I've been off the bike for a while now with my broken collar bone did make it to one group ride last week but on call for work this week. On the group ride I could still out climb the same people and I rode strong fairly strong but sudden changes in pace kicked my butt a bit.

I think this would be a good kick in the ass to loose some weight before starting my off season base work. It would also allow me to get some power data to look at and learn to analyze once i get my PM

I did P90x earlier in the season. Definitely made me stronger and more flexible. I also lost 15lbs.

I did a full round of P90x a couple years ago. I think it was helpful for cycling.. especially plyometrics. I tried insanity a couple months ago after a period of no workouts. blew my knees and ankles up a couple of times before deciding it was a bad idea. The current plan is to strengthen my legs with weights before going back to the p90x plyo routine as an off season work out.

I guess my recommendation would be to start with some lower impact cardio and weights before you dive in if you've been off the bike a while. injuries suck.

it's a high intensity cardio workout program. http://www.beachbody.com/product/fitness_programs/insanity.do?t=san2c2

Data Junkie, I have one for you: Hot Yoga. Apparently, what they do here in Central FL is get a small room and put a bunch of heaters in it (in August no less!). Then the people cram and and do Yoga. The idea is that the heat allows the muscles to stretch better. I think this is a fad that will not hang around too long.

Yoga is hard enough for me. That would make it terrible.

Hmmm . . .

Seems to me these "extreme" programs are pretty hard on your body and not something anyone would maintain in the long run. Kind of like a get rich quick scheme.

Maybe a 20-something in good shape can abuse their body like that and get away with it (I used to when I was that age) but for the rest of us it seems like a bad idea. Come to think of it, I have a tendon injury from my 20s that I still pay for.

Better to develop a routine you can live with for the long haul and stick with it. If something in your lifestyle gives you a body you don't want, then you will have to change the lifestyle anyway.

Dude, hot yoga has been around for AGES (well at least a couple of decades). Definitely not a fad.

I did insanity and I was unimpressed (ditto for most of p90x) it worked great for some people but for others (myself included) it did not do much. Instead we did a program that consisted of Crossfit endurance + HIIT Cardio for a bigger lose (220 to 180 weight loss)

I did p90x and insanity and I have never been so bored in my life. I kept up with everything and the diet sucks.

p90x is good with groups. I did this early on and cycling it it helped. I don't like insanity.

LOL. The sales pitch is based on the same idea - amazing results in very little time.

I did insanity last year and it didn't seem to greatly improve my mountain biking performance. However my friend did injure his knee in the later stages of Insanity.

Nope, but I did crossfit and cycling for a while and it was a great compliment to riding - but I didn't have enough time to fit both in, so I dropped crossfit (plus I'm feeling a little too old to go to redline every single day!). I do miss all the core work, it really helped my riding. If your goal is to shed pounds I'd focus on your diet (even crosssfit pushes nutrition - i.e. the Paleo program) IMO

I poke around with Insanity sometimes, mixing it into P90X on cardio days. I like it for a change of pace. I've tried a couple of the Asylum videos, too -- hard, but fun.

My wife's recently taken a liking to the Turbofire videos. On our way back from a walk a couple evenings ago, she wanted to jog for a bit. She hasn't gone running at all in seven years, but was happy that she could finally pick up the pace again.

Hot Yoga is old news ... that's been around for half a dozen years or more. In fact, I think it's "out" now. I haven't heard about it in a while.

A lot of people say that I'm insane to do the long rides I do. :D

You can kinda get yer sweat on with Zumba, but if you're uncoordinated like me, it ain't easy. It's basically dancing, but amped up a bit, like what you'd see a go-go dancer do on stage compared to the people on the dance floor.

Yup. Even with these workouts, when people complain that they're "too intense", I say to just do them with less intensity. I still do a lot of pushups from my knees, for example (I'm pushing plenty of weight anyway), and I just don't squat that low.

And, yes, they can be done over a long period of time. Ignore the marketing hype and just keep it in the stash of ideas for workouts.
