Bicycle Mechanics - troubleshooting

Being new to cycling and somewhat mechanically inclined with motorized vehicles I want to learn how to tune my bicycle. I did buy a bike repair manual, but reading it kind of makes me feel as though I am reading jibberish at this point. Is there a quick reference guide of sorts to tell what needs to be done for specific derailleur/shifting issues?

Besides the very skimpy info in most owners manuals, there's a ton of tutorials available on the net, and even some ipad apps. Search by topic, ie. "adjusting rear derailleur" and you'll find a choice of print & photo, or video instructions, both free and not. I suggest reviewing two different tutorials, until you have a sense of what's involved then starting with the basics and moving beyond that as you gain experience.

If you get stumped on a particular detail there are hundreds of people available to help or kibbitz here.

Thanks, never thought about you tube and I have been to the park tool site just haven't looked at it close. After watching a few video's I think I'll try a few adjustments.
