Hybrid Bicycles - Trek fx 7.2

This bicycle has been so much trouble, from day one, had it now for 4 years, I'm about ready to upgrade this thing away.

22.5inch frame

Constant shifting trouble with it, has 2500 miles on it now, will not stay in the lower gears, when hill climbing, putting a load on the drive train, pops out of gear.

Did you try adjusting the height of the front derailleur?

I had similar issues on the same bike until I adjusted the derailleur. "busy" bike shops would often rather charge you for a tune up and leave you wanting a new bike than fix this kind of issue.

Sounds like defective components from day 1. When I had mine I literally had no more than a dozen miss shifts in about 900 miles. Thing was solid as a rock but the ride was on the harsh side because the bike was too small.

I just picked a 7.2 up this week... I had to admit that I was actually really happy how it rode out of the box. I have put about 50 miles on it and not a single problem.

Hey guys! I test rode a 7.5 fx 20" and trek 7.2 fx 22.5" today and I liked the 7.2 better because it was smoother and very quiet. The 7.5 had rattles in it while riding. Also I liked the 22.5 frame size better than the recommended 20 inch. Im 5'9, 238 lbs. The LBS guy told me that the 7.5 needed to be adjusted so it wouldnt rattle if I brought it. The 7.2 felt better for me and was so fast, the shifting was really smooth. I am a neophyte as you can discern from my post count. I think I will ask my LBS to get a 20" 7.2 so I can try it out. I have slight standover on the bigger frame, when I dismount or stop I must lean the bike a little to the side. The seat even felt good and I love the red color. I just dont want to spend 500$ than realize that it isnt what I want or worse turn me off from riding. Also the 7.5 is 400$ more and I know my wife isnt going to go for that. Knobd you mentioned the frame was to small...was the size recommended to you or did you just pick it out?

My problems revolved around the fact that I sized bike solely on standover height which is a mistake. I was more of a cycling newbie when I bought the bike but the LBS knew that and should have been more assertive in seeing that a 17.5 inch frame is too small for someone 6' tall. I have very short legs for my height (barely 31 inch inseam). I rode the bike for 7 months and didn't realize it was too small until I starting riding a 54 cm (> 20 inch) road bike that I got for free. In your case it seems that the opposite it true, i.e. a 22.5 inch frame for someone 5'9 seems awful large. However, if you are all legs I guess that it could happen. I thought the FX also came in a 21 as well. Be careful of an LBS that tries to push off what they have in stock even if the bike does not fit you right. I learned the hard way that NOTHING is more important than how the bike fits you.
