I'm replacing the trigger shifter on a bike with an SA 3-speed, and I've got an issue with the cable fitting the shifter. The old shifter is one of the original UK-made ones, but the replacement is one of the new Taiwanese ones. The Sturmey cable I was using fitted the original fine, but the slot into which the cable fits on the mechanism of the new trigger seems to be narrower than the one on the old trigger, to the point that the cable won't go in. Have the cables gotten narrower with time, or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance

May need to get the current cable set too.

I'd recommend the one where the barrel adjuster
is a draw bolt pinch clamp on the end of the cable .. type.

there are cable sets where both ends are fixed .

Which model of shifter are you using? If it's the classic trigger style, like this

the old style cable should fit.
If it looks like this

or this

it requires a standard shift cable, the old Sturmey Archer cables do not fit.

It's a classic trigger, and the cable doesn't fit. I can post a picture of the bit it doesn't fit into, if that would help.

Posting a picture may help. Im assuming that since you removed the old shifter, you know the right way to thread the cable through, so I cant imagine why it wont fit.

Sorry for the awful picture. On the one I fitted to the bike, the slot on the lower part of the trigger in the photo is not wide enough for the cable, although this is the old trigger not the new one. I know how to fit the cable, I've refitted them to another bike more than once, and it definitely won't fit. It does seem odd.

seek out the classic cable replacement then, Or if close, but just not quite fitting

file a bit of Zinc or brass off the ends .

ZHSJ102 is the cable set, original parts.

I just rummaged through my Sturmey Archer stuff thinking I may have a classic trigger to try fitting a cable, but I must have sold it.
What I do have is a clone shifter, which is a total piece of crap, but that's another story. I fitted the end of a new classic style Sturmey Archer cable in it, and it fit ok. It was tight, I had to really push to get it to seat, but it went in.

The cable isn't the issue, I had a classic trigger and classic cable, the spring went in the trigger so I bought a new classic-style trigger. The soldered nipple on the end isn't the problem, the cable itself is too thick for the groove.

It's at an impasse then, I can only wish you luck,
perhaps the vendor of the parts you bought can offer resolution.
