Today I had to put in a new gear cable for my front derailleur.

I have the Grips shifts- mtb type
which are a few years older from the 1990's

pain in the ass. As you pretty much have to take apart the whole assembly to make sure the cable is proper seated in the grip shift

anyone else have similar problems?

I was able to successfully get it all to work, just a pain in the arse.

Swapping cables on the old-style Gripshifts is indeed a pain.
SRAM has corrected the issue on the newer units.

I agree, which is why I bought new Gripshifters. The whole set cost under $20 with new cables - and work way better than the older units!
