Advocacy & Safety - RE: Provenzano's Anti-Bicycling Bill on Talk Radio!

John Gambling, the WABC radio host, on 770AM (conservative talk radio)...

Is currently opining about Madeline Provenzano's stupid anti-bicycling bill.

He is not taking kindly to Ms. Provenzano's bill and is calling city councilmen idiots basically.

Tomorrow Mayor Bloomberg will be doing his weekly hourlong talk with John Gambling on his radio show and he'll be asking the mayor about his opinion on this bill.

Some idiot old woman from Long Island is now calling in and railing against bicyclists on John Gambling's show and John Gambling is surprisingly defending them and complaining about the bureaucracy in NYC politics

Go get' em, John Gambling! (Never thought I'd be on the side of a conservative!)

Maybe this is a good sign for the future of conservatives, to notice when something's "conservative" vs. "radical". (although I do not know anythign about Gambling, he may be a logical--meaning liberal--leaning conservative anyway.)

I heard it also. I'm gonna try to get through tomorrow morning and talk to the mayor. John Gambling is very pragmatic. It's what I like about him.

This is part of the American tradition of conservatism: rebellion against an excessively coercive hand of the government. This is different, by the way, from European conservative tradition which tends to endorse a 'your betters know better" philosophy.

I think the bipartisanship of the cyclist community is what gives me the most hope that things are going to change for the better. I'm glad to hear a radio guy defending cyclist (may be a first). I hope that bill goes down in flames.

Such an enlightened point of view. You'd be surprised how much you agree with some of those uncool conservatives. Of course you could just discount your common ground altogether and ignore people for their political beliefs. I for one, along with plenty of others on here, choose not to.

Wait a minute. What does the New York State Vehicle Code say about cycling? A county, city, or township cannont make a law that conflicts with exhisting state or fedral laws. I could look the code up myself.

To see the bipartisanship behind cycling, look at the roster of the Congressional Bike Caucus. Progressives (Peter De Fazio, D-OR, and a Sheldon Brown-trained ex bike mechanic!) next to conservative Tom Tancredo (R-Colo, known immigration superhawk.) I guess bikes don't come in Dem, Rep, Lib, or Green!

Our governor is conservative.. and he's probably the biggest cycling advocate in our state. He can do a century without breaking a sweat.
