What I take away from this story:

•The man's car-free status is presented as something positive, and presumably even a source of pride for the alma mater, not something that makes him a freak or a loser (although I suspect that many of his fellow alumni may not be convinced)

•Interesting comments on traffic conditions in various locales

•FWIW, OPs in some other recent threads may want to note that being car-free has apparently not prevented him from having a girlfriend, but if they're in Portland that may have tilted the odds a bit

And he's a transportation planner!

I liked this quote:

When asked if not owning a car has cramped his lifestyle, he responds with a quick negative and a question of his own: 'Does not owning a private airplane reduce your vacation trips or travel?'"

What I take away from this story.

In most other countries his 'car free status' wouldn't even have been mentioned. Indeed the idea that owning a car confers 'status' would be viewed as bizarre.

If this were a German, Irish or Italian alumnus the story would be his career and family.

The idea that he might be viewed as a "freak or a loser" is bizarre in the extreme.
