Track Cycling: Velodrome Racing and Training Area - New Chicago Velodrome

Well, the new track is in once piece - the Last panel is in place (no guardrails or Apron yet). Should be ridable in about a week. It rides nice and smooth like a new track should be! 166m with 50 degree banking. Sounds like fun to me!

Any interest in Chicago for this track, or would people rather just ride Northbrook?

Yeah, this is exciting news. I'm glad to see another velodrome being built.

I heard they were asking for volunteers to help build, but I never got the chance to make it out there after work. I'm kind of surprised how fast it got finished. This is great!

We checked it out on the way back from the Sprint Omnium in northbrook. I dont know if I would really count it as a velodrome. It is so small and tight that anything more than two riders wouldnt really work, and you couldnt even do the normal match sprint moves. It seems closer to the red bull jawn than to a normal velodrome. But the plan is to build a 250m track in the same location at some point, which will be awesome.

From the few pics I've seen it looks plenty big for a lot of fun. The old Ghent track is 166 m, and they put 8 or 10 madison teams on it and even run derny races. Forest City is 138 m and 50 degrees and the one time I was there for open training it had quite a lot of people on it. I think they race up to 5 or 6 madison teams and ride relief on the apron.

I looked up the 6-days of Flanders, and it looks like they run 13 teams on the 166 m track there!

You could fit it into a hockey rink if you have a dropped infield (the track apron would have to be raised to the same level as the first row of seats). Take a look at pictures of the UCI velodrome in Aigle to see what I mean about having the track elevated above the infield.
