Howdy all,

I'm salvaging a bike tour that was cut short by rain. A buddy and I stopped short at Roseburg and are attempting to pick up our route again in Glide. The current plan is to camp near Steamboat at the end of day 1 (90mi), near or past Brice Creek on day 2(65-85mi), possible camp at Belknap Hotspring on day 3 (if we max out our mileage on day 1 and 2), and pick up the bus into Eugene for Track Town Pizza Buffet on day 4 and a ride back to Cottage Grove.

I feel pretty good about the route, but was curious if anyone has suggestions on how to get from Cottage Grove to Sutherlin and Eugene to Cottage Grove.

(My buddy and I are used to 100+ mi days, but there's no real way of knowing if we'll knock off the 90mi on the first day. If we don't, we'll make up the difference along the route.)

If Goggle maps behaves itself, here is an outline of our planned route (http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Cottage+Grove,+OR&daddr=43.61317,-123.1768+to:43.53865,-123.186784+to:43.41689,-123.3003+to:43.382274,-123.316992+to:43.3103113,-123.308458+to:43.3113534,-123.12688+to:OR-138+E+to:Steamboat,+North+Umpqua,+OR+to:Dorena,+OR+to:43.66463,-122.69858+to:43.7076245,-122.5001807+to:Oakridge,+OR+to:Belknap+Springs+Rd,+McKenzie,+OR+97413+to:1809+Franklin+Boulevard,+Eu gene,+OR+97403-1984+(Track+Town+Pizza)+to:44.03342,-123.07229+to:44.02876,-123.08031+to:44.022938,-123.0799644+to:44.0145911,-123.0759356+to:44.01203,-123.07506+to:44.0028549,-123.0730336+to:Cottage+Grove,+OR&hl=en&ll=43.638063,-122.577209&spn=1.133009,1.766052&sll=43.707221,-122.478848&sspn=0.035056,0.055189&geocode=FXdMnAIdu0Kq-CktMkyGTDDBVDHsX3tuKzyFug%3BFfJ7mQIdoHio-Cn5BwDyl7TGVDHt-Rq4WMncHg%3BFdpYmAIdoFGo-Cl5W0y4j7HGVDHTn02tcLAYBw%3BFTp9lgIdNJam-CkLky5uz6fGVDHuhgqI1OyWGQ%3BFQL2lQIdAFWm-CmXq1mTgR3EVDFHK8aURQH_ag%3BFefclAIdVnam-Cm3M8iD5B7EVDFw886kAl-EFA%3BFfnglAIdoDup-CntnAEgcp_GVDGpWbtiBIUiDA%3BFeSslAIdqqmp-A%3BFfZllQIdCDSv-CmlrGmvPZPGVDEKeD2QJIj46A%3BFaUcmwIdREat-Cl7JHOcxNLGVDESX0EkOv-fVA%3BFfZEmgIdrMSv-Cmj3k7Q1NbGVDHdqAj_IG6G-A%3BFejsmgIdrMuy-Cm7Ydo_7SjHVDHrJknbtUo6OA%3BFdCEmwId7GGz-CmtyZQvUS7HVDGPnQzBNYqShQ%3BFdlKogIdgJ25-Cm3B7gQVFi_VDHpDrmtQ0g8YA%3BFU4XoAIdeyeq-CF_YW6CIEe1-imv0zgGJR7BVDE-jJjD6mHXgw%3BFYzlnwId3hCq-CmLmCegSh7BVDEQbWaJwIbuQg%3BFVjTnwIdivGp-ClVMq4rTR7BVDHZxMS0VU2LUQ%3BFZq8nwId5PKp-ClhvAFkrh_BVDGyx_D7uwYLTw%3BFf-bnwIdoQKq-CmNYpkWoR_BVDGSUwM5REO7mw%3BFf6RnwIdDAaq-Ck_OLRLoB_BVDF6Kh6ytDvzIg%3BFSZunwId9w2q-CmtwDhrdx_BVDGU4Fjn5J9zvg%3BFXdMnAIdu0Kq-CktMkyGTDDBVDHsX3tuKzyFug&mra=dpe&mrsp=11&sz=14&via=1,2,3,4,5,6,10,11,15,16,17,18,19,20&dirflg=b&t=h&z=9&lci=bike).

Nice route over all, I can offer one tip that you will enjoy. When you leave Eugene on Dillard Road, turn right on highway 99 as shown on your map. But after 2 -3 miles on 99 turn left on Dale Kuni Road, it takes you over I-5 and past a golf course and ends at Cloverdale Road. Turn left on Cloverdale and at about 1 mile take a right on Sears Road. This will take you to Cottage Grove and is MUCH nicer riding than 99 to CG.
Also between Cottage Grove and Sutherlin there is a 3 mile section of gravel road, it's not bad to ride, just so you know.

Here's a Eugene to Cottage Grove route. http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/44315986 Battle Creek is gravel (except for the first mile). You can stay on Wolf Creek if you feel like doing all asphalt. This is definitely not the most direct route, but it has the virtue of having very little traffic and some very nice scenery. In fact, once you get to Siuslaw River Rd you will be on this year's Cycle Oregon route (but going the other way).

Here's a route from Eugene to Drain. http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/44318622 The first part is the same as the Eugene to Cottage Grove (except here I have you on Wolf Creek instead of Battle Creek). I haven't ridden the portions after you leave Siuslaw River Rd., but have seen write-ups on a motorcycle site. It looks there are several decent options from Drain to Sutherlin.

Have fun. Your planned route looks awesome. I'll have to throw some fatter tires on and give parts of it a whirl. Maybe you could post a ride report with some photos when you finish.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate all of your suggestions. :thumb: Looks like we'll be using Dale Kuni Road or Wolf Creek! How is Willamette St out to Fox Hollow Rd?

I'll go ahead and post a ride report afterwards. I'm really looking forward to the route between Steamboat to Dorena to Oakridge.

Thanks! I have very little experience with Eugene. I know where U of O, Track Town Pizza, Bergs, and REI are at and that's about it!

Thanks Shifty. I might take you up on that. Eugene is a great town, but I never can figure out how to get around when I'm passing through there. I notice from your public profile you work at a college. The guy I'm taking this tour tour with works at WOU and I'm a teacher at a middle school. We might have some things in common.
